24 Revival Is Actively Being Discussed at Fox

The Kiefer Sutherland series 24 was an immediate sensation when it arrived on screens back in 2001, and as the real-time thriller approaches its 20th anniversary, it looks like Fox could be about to restart the clock for a second time as discussions are underway for another return, with the network saying that there is a “high chance” of some form of the show coming back. The initial run of 24 lasted until 2010, and was followed up by a limited TV event, 24: Live Another Day, there is no word as to who would be starring in his new addition to the franchise and if Sutherland would be back in his iconic role as Jack Bauer.

During its 8 seasons, the original iteration of 24 pulled in some immense praise and numerous awards. With a tightly scripted, unwinding storyline that was both self-contained and provided the overall narrative, each episode upped the stakes and left cliffhanger after cliffhanger for Jack Bauer fans to dwell on for a week in between every one. Fan favorite characters died, villains returned and changed allegiances and it was all done in a hail of gunfire, standoffs and explosions…all the usual high-octane drama that keeps people talking and makes a show go from great to legendary. 24 picked up Golden Globes, Primetime Emmy’s and more, and though its last entry arrived back in 2014, the series is still as popular as ever on streaming services and syndication.

As well as the series, the Kiefer Sutherland led franchise has obviously branched out into other media. There have been board games, video games, books and more, and although there was the TV movie Redemption, which sat between the sixth and seventh seasons, there was also talk of a big screen event, but that was last discussed in 2012 and then faded into the industry graveyard of dead ideas.

Deadline reported news that Michael Thorn, Fox Entertainment’s President, made the confirmation that talks were underway to bring back the show “in some form” and although no specific details were offered it should be worth noting that since the Disney takeover of Fox, there are many discussions now on-going about reviving some of the networks biggest previous hits. According to Thorn, the talks have been going on with the original showrunners of 24 and producers have seen a pitch. The official statement reads, “There’s still a possibility, there’s still some discussions with the producers on a take that we have yet to hear. There [are] some active creative discussions that are happening.”

It is not the first time that there have been talks for another dip into the 24 pool at Fox. Executive producer Howard Gordon previously hinted that a new iteration of the show was in the works, but gave no specifics, while in 2019 there was consideration given to a prequel series and a legal spin-off series but both of those ideas dropped off radar in the past couple of years. However, it does suggest that the property is being still actively talked about at Fox, which means that this latest update is quite easy to believe as a new active step towards 24 coming back to screens once again sometime in the future.
