There have been a lot of great action movies over the past few years, but perhaps none has come as close to perfection as the 2022 hit, Top Gun: Maverick. The sequel to Tony Scott’s 1986 classic was nostalgia done right, combining a mix of the past and present to deliver the highest-grossing movie of Tom Cruise’s career. It’s been called by some fans “one of the best movies ever made,” and nearly three years after its streaming debut, Top Gun: Maverick continues to dominate Paramount+.
Hitting theaters on May 27, 2022, Top Gun: Maverick generated over $1.4 billion at the worldwide box office, coming in second that year behind James Cameron’s Avatar: The Way of Water. Up until Top Gun: Maverick hit cinemas, Mission: Impossible – Fallout had been Cruise’s highest earner, which director Joseph Kosinski’s epic sequel had no problems toppling.
Making its debut on Paramount+ on December 22, 2022, Top Gun: Maverick has enjoyed tremendous longevity on the streaming service. It’s been in the worldwide Top 10 for almost three years now, which is an amazing feat when you consider it’s been seen by just about everyone and their dog at this point. Fans just can’t get enough of the “defining action movie of the 2020s”, which also stars Miles Teller, Jennifer Connelly, Jon Hamm, Glen Powell, Monica Barbaro, Lewis Pullman, Ed Harris, and Val Kilmer. “After more than thirty years of service as one of the Navy’s top aviators, Pete ‘Maverick’ Mitchell (Cruise) is where he belongs, pushing the envelope as a courageous test pilot and dodging the advancement in rank that would ground him. When he finds himself training a detachment of Top Gun graduates, Maverick encounters Lt. Bradley Bradshaw (Teller), the son of Maverick’s late friend Lt. Nick ‘Goose’ Bradshaw. Facing an uncertain future and confronting the ghosts of his past, Maverick is drawn into a confrontation with his own deepest fears, culminating in a mission that demands the ultimate sacrifice from those who will be chosen to fly it.”

While it’s clear that the majority of fans find Top Gun: Maverick to be a thrilling sequel based on its 99% Rotten Tomatoes audience score, they weren’t the only ones who thought the action hit was a worthy successor. Critics agreed that Cruise was at his best, and gave Top Gun: Maverick a Certified Fresh rating of 96%. As critic Shakyl Lambert put it:
“Top Gun: Maverick is the rare legacy sequel that eclipses the original in every way possible, thanks to mind-blowing action and great character growth.”
As for what comes next, it’s pretty obvious that Paramount wants to continue the series based on how big of a hit Top Gun: Maverick was at the box office. Though details are scarce, we do know that a sequel is in active development, with writer/producer Christopher McQuarrie commenting earlier this year on the Happy Sad Confused podcast that he’s “cracked” the story for Top Gun 3. “It wasn’t hard,” he said, adding:
“I thought it would be, and that’s a good place to go from is you walk into the room going, ‘Come on, what are we going to do?’ and Ehren Kruger pitched something and I went, ‘Mhm actually,’ and we had one conversation about it and the framework is there.”
As we await more news on the future of the Top Gun series, Top Gun: Maverick is now streaming on Paramount+.
