Megatron stands as the ultimate nemesis, a relentless force who has plagued the Autobots at every turn. His raw power is legendary, and in some continuities, like Transformers One (2024), he is depicted as a pit-fighting champion forged in Cybertron’s brutal arenas. His brutal mindset contributes to his near-unshakable resilience. Built with heavy-duty engineering and often upgraded in his quest for more power, Megatron can withstand point-blank artillery blasts that would crush most Transformers, and his iconic arm-mounted fusion cannon only amplifies his terrifying might.
Beyond his physical capabilities, Megatron is a masterful military strategist who orchestrates interstellar wars. He attacks on all fronts, using political manipulation and psychological terror in his relentless battle against the Autobots. The nefarious Decepticon leader has pursued personal upgrades to enhance his strength, such as embracing the Dark Star Saber and using Dark Energon. Although Megatron is a fearsome foe who can beat most Transformers one-on-one, he is not stronger than every Autobot. I’ve gathered five immensely powerful Autobots who could easily beat Megatron in battle, and some even killed him.
Grimlock
The Dinobot Leader Delivers Unmatched Ferocity
Strength: Grimlock is an immensely powerful Transformer whose raw physical strength is only matched by his unbridled rage. He can overpower most threats, and his Tyrannosaurus form can bite through the hardest Transformer armor. In his dinosaur form, he delivers devastating tail attacks and breathes fire. While in robot form, he wields a sword and shield in brutal close combat.
Grimlock’s rage makes him unpredictable and hard to stop, even when damaged or mentally fatigued. He’s often portrayed as a simple brute, with the original animated series showing him speaking in broken sentences. In Transformers: Age of Extinction (2014), he is depicted as an almost mindless animal with immense strength that Optimus Prime had to tame. Some comic books portray his simple speech as a ruse, with the character deliberately acting less intelligent. Later media like the Transformers: Cyberverse (2018-2021) series and the Fall of Cybertron video game show Grimlock as an equally capable strategist and fighter.
Encounters With Megatron: Grimlock has fought Megatron in several battles with the Autobots and other Dinobots. Transformers: The Last Knight (2017) shows Grimlock biting Megatron and delivering a devastating blow. The G1 animated series shows the Dinobots fighting back, such as in Season 1’s “War of the Dinobots,” where Megatron manipulates Grimlock into turning on Optimus Prime.
When Grimlock realizes the deception, he turns on Megatron and launches a relentless assault that forces the Decepticons to retreat. The episode highlights Grimlock’s power, even when portrayed as less intelligent, with his brute-force strength enough to defeat Megatron. In a one-on-one fight, Grimlock’s ferocity and rage make him a nightmare for opponents like Megatron.
Fortress Maximus
A Titan-Class Triple-Changer
Strength: Fortress Maximus, or Fort Max as he is commonly called, is a city-sized Titan. He was an architect before the planet plunged into civil war. Fort Max was modified for warfare and is considered one of the most powerful Generation 1 (G1) Transformers, with top-tier strength and endurance. Fort Max is one of several city-bots that live up to their name, forming massive structures that house other Transformers.
He’s a triple-changer, meaning Fort Max has three distinct configurations. The Autobot has a robot mode and can transform into a massive city or a heavily armed spaceship with mortars, missiles, and various cannons. Fort Max also has repair bays to keep other Transformers in the fight and can dispatch his own remote-controlled vehicles.
Encounters With Megatron: Fort Max is naturally a pacifist who prefers not to fight, yet he is one of the biggest threats to Megatron and the Decepticons. Megatron bested Fort Max in the G1 Marvel Comics continuity, but their most harrowing encounter came in the Transformers: Generation 2 comic story “All or Nothing.” Megatron receives supercharged upgrades that make him the same size as Fort Max. If Megatron had not damaged Fort Max while the Autobot was dormant, the outcome would have been different. Unfortunately, Fort Max dies but keeps the Ark from Megatron. In a fair fight, Fort Max should easily overpower Megatron, but the Decepticon loves to play dirty.
Optimus Prime
Optimus Prime Has Bested Megatron Many Times
Strength: Optimus Prime leads the Autobots and has proven, more than any other character, that Megatron can be defeated. Across most major Transformers continuities, he is among the most versatile warriors, with immense strength, intelligence, and endurance that make him a formidable physical and mental combatant. He has iconic weapons that aid him in battle, like his Energon Axe and Ion Blaster, but his greatest strengths lie in tactical strategy and inspiring moral leadership.
Optimus Prime possesses the Matrix of Leadership, an ancient artifact that enhances his physical and mental abilities. It lets him tap into the wisdom of past Primes and reactivate the spark of fallen Transformers. Optimus has proven resilient, fighting impossible odds, rallying the Autobots against any threat, and repeatedly defeating Megatron in single combat.
Encounters With Megatron: Megatron may knock Optimus Prime down, but never for long. Endless encounters prove the Decepticon leader loses in fair fights and when he tries to cheat or gain upgrades. The Autobot leader bested Megatron throughout the original animated series and Transformers: The Movie (1986). The live-action Michael Bay-directed films saw Megatron thwarted at every turn, even when Optimus Prime died temporarily in Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen (2009).
Numerous comic books offer a similar dynamic, such as the Multi-World story, where Optimus Prime and Megatron fight in a computer simulation. Megatron cheats to gain more power, but Optimus wins by collapsing a structure on the Decepticon. The story also shows Optimus Prime’s unshakable moral code, as innocent people die in the collapse. Despite being only computer code, Optimus sees it as a violation of Autobot principles and demands that Megatron be given the victory. If you need someone to take Megatron down, time and again, Optimus Prime has proven to be the Autobot for the job.
Metroplex
A Titan-Class Autobot That Killed Megatron in Seconds
Strength: Metroplex is a gigantic Titan Transformer the size of a city. He can transform between robot mode and a massive city structure, each with intense firepower. Metroplex has cannons, missile launchers, and lasers, but his most devastating weapon is undoubtedly his antimatter projectors, which can obliterate anything they hit. He is also resilient, making him a formidable foe for massive Decepticons like the city-bot Trypticon.
As a massive city, Metroplex can deploy smaller independent units for reinforcements, such as Six-Gun, Slammer, and Scamper. Beyond his arsenal, Metroplex shows unyielding loyalty to the Autobots and Optimus Prime, willing to sacrifice himself to stop the Decepticons. His short temper often comes with intense displays of power, as he can wipe out swaths of Decepticons in a single attack. Among the Titans, Metroplex is one of the strongest, and his track record against Megatron proves it.
Encounters With Megatron: Metroplex indirectly appears in Transformers: The Movie as Autobot City, a defensive location that launches weapons at Megatron and other attacking Decepticons. However, his most memorable appearance, and my personal favorite, is killing Megatron in a video game. In Transformers: Fall of Cybertron (2012), Megatron faces Metroplex, who quickly pulverizes the Decepticon leader by repeatedly bashing him into the ground. This fierce display of Metroplex’s power happens so fast it feels almost humorous. Megatron’s cocky nature was no match for the massive Titan’s power, leaving the Decepticon an obliterated pile of scrap.
Omega Supreme
A Colossal Ancient Guardian Robot
Strength: Omega Supreme is a massive, ancient Sentinel Guardian robot, built to defend Cybertron against off-world threats. When the Great Cybertronian War broke out, the Autobots saw value in rebuilding non-sentient robots and granting them sparks, and Omega Supreme was one of them. His colossal size comes with equally impressive strength. Among powerful G1 Transformers, Omega Supreme has top-tier strength and firepower, exemplified by his plasma cannon and crushing claw hand.
Omega Supreme can convert into multiple configurations at once, including his mobile defense fortress and rocket forms that can house other Transformers. His size and abilities make him a formidable presence, and his strikes terrify every Decepticon because he can vaporize enemies in a single blast. A past betrayal made him a recluse, but the Autobots can always rely on Omega Supreme to lend a hand in battle.
Encounters With Megatron: In the original animated series, Omega Supreme single-handedly defended the Autobots’ base against Megatron, Shockwave, and Devastator. This impressive display is enough evidence that he could beat the Decepticon leader one-on-one. Megatron overpowered Omega Supreme in the Transformers: War for Cybertron (2010) video game, but it required Dark Energon to corrupt the Autobots’ system. On an even playing field, Omega Supreme could crush Megatron with his claw with little effort.
