Makeup artist Jenna Flug is on a mission to make getting ready feel less intimidating and a lot more fun. After trading a career in finance and tech for the beauty world, the New York native founded Powder Room, a beauty brand built around approachable makeup education through hands-on classes, tutorials, and pop-ups that encourage women to experiment with confidence rather than seek perfection.
Beyond her sought-after makeup lessons, Flug has developed something of a cult following for her meticulously restored vintage compacts. Sourced from around the world and dating from the 1920s through the 1970s, each collectible compact is cleaned, sterilized, and refilled with fresh makeup, transforming glamorous pieces of beauty history into everyday essentials. The one-of-a-kind compacts, along with Powder Room’s signature brushes, will be available to shop during Flug’s pop-up at LoveShackFancy Sag Harbor on August 28, where she’ll also be offering makeup touch-ups and mini tutorials.
With summer’s final stretch in full swing (sad face), we tapped Flug to share the season’s standout makeup trends, the techniques she’s loving right now, and the hero products she recommends to recreate each look. Whether you’re after a barely-there glow or a polished evening face, consider this your expert-approved beauty roadmap for the rest of the season!
1. Effortless Color
Summer makeup should feel fun, not fussy. Instead of bold graphic color, I’m seeing color that looks a little lived in, almost like you accidentally stumbled upon the perfect eye look. A muted lilac or pistachio adds just enough interest while still feeling incredibly wearable.

2. Dewy Cheeks
Nothing makes someone look healthier than cheeks that look hydrated and naturally plump. I’m seeing blush that gives the illusion that the color is actually coming from within the skin. Cream formulas are perfect for this because they melt in beautifully and leave behind that fresh, just-spent-the-day-outside glow.

3. The Return of the Matte Lip
Gloss isn’t going anywhere, but I’m loving the return of a soft matte lip. When your skin is dewy and your cheeks have a healthy glow, adding a hydrated matte lip creates overall balance. Otherwise, it’s easy for the whole face to start feeling a little too shiny, especially in the summer heat.

4. A Wash of Sparkle
Summer sparkle should look like it’s part of your skin, not sitting on top of it. I’m reaching for sheer shimmer that catches the light when you turn your head instead of obvious glitter. It’s one of those little details that makes your eyes look brighter without anyone being able to pinpoint exactly why.

5. Lived-In Lip Liner
Summer is all about ease, and nothing is easier than a lip liner that looks like your actual lips. Instead of sharp, overdrawn edges, think softly defined and blurred. It’s one of the quickest ways to make your lips look fuller while still looking completely natural.

6. Better Brushes = Longer-Lasting Makeup
One of the biggest makeup mistakes I see during the summer has nothing to do with products but rather application. Humidity, long commutes, sweat, and heat are already working against your makeup. If you’re applying products with your fingers or the wrong tools, they’re much more likely to slide around throughout the day.
A great brush helps work makeup into the skin instead of leaving it sitting on top, which makes a noticeable difference in both how natural it looks and how long it lasts. If you only invest in one thing this season, I’d honestly recommend investing in better brushes before buying another foundation.
