Dexter Teaser Hints That a Crucial Character Will Return

A newly released teaser for Showtime’s upcoming Dexter revival has hinted at the return of a crucial character from the serial killer’s past, his son Harrison. Captioned with the rather ominous “Wanna know a secret? Daddy kills people,” the teaser shows Dexter burning a lovely photograph of father and son in an attempt to sever ties with his previous life.

After eight (mostly) critically acclaimed seasons, Dexter’s original run wrapped up back in 2013, and has since become infamous for its disappointing finale. One of the plot threads that frustratingly left dangling was the fate of Dexter’s son, Harrison, who was left abandoned by his father come the series end, who entrusts Hannah to care for him in his absence. The new teaser suggests that Harrison could return all these years later, and hopefully provide some closure.

Many have been hoping for some time that Dexter would be brought back to make amends, with returning star Michael C. Hall recently explaining why he felt that now was the right time to bring the character back. “This one, a lot of it has to do with time passed. This is going to happen in real time, as if as much time has passed since the finale happened,” the actor revealed recently. “And yeah, we kind of just got the creative band back together again. Clyde Phillips is back, who was the showrunner for the first four seasons, running the show. And Marcos Siega, who is one of the directors. We’re gonna shoot it like a long, 10-hour movie. It was a combination of the scripts and the timing. I always thought maybe the time will reveal itself when it’s the right time to do it and it did. And I’m excited.”

The new series will reintroduce Dexter Morgan now living alone in upstate New York and working at the quaint Fred’s Fish & Game as a sales associate. The series will also introduce a new villain for Dexter to contend with in the form of Clancy Brown as Kurt Caldwell, the unofficial mayor of the small town of Iron Lake. Powerful, generous, loved by everyone – he’s a true man of the people, but should you never make the mistake of crossing Kurt, or hurting anyone that he cares for, or he will make you pay.

Making up the rest of the supporting cast of newcomers are Julia Jones (Goliath, The Mandalorian), David Magidoff (The Morning Show) and Alano Miller (Jane the Virgin), and Lovecraft Country’s Jamie Chung, who recently teased the return of some familiar faces from Dexter’s past. “The original series happened over 10 years ago. So, there’s certainly a different vibe of the way the actual show is shot in terms of the aesthetic, she said. “I do think it’s a little darker. It takes place in upstate New York and as we know from the last season, Dexter’s hiding. So, it certainly carries on and you have a lot of fresh faces, but a lot of familiar ones. I think it will certainly satisfy everyone’s appetite. Especially if you’re a big Dexter fan.”

Production on the highly anticipated Dexter revival began back in February 2021. The 10-episode limited series will also see Clyde Phillips returning as showrunner and has scheduled a fall 2021 premiere date.
