Curb Your Enthusiasm May Go to Season 12, But That’s Probably It Warns Jeff Garlin

Jeff Garlin revealed some Curb Your Enthusiasm news during an ABC’s The Goldbergs Q&A last week. “Yeah, I’m in touch with him,” Garlin said when a reporter asked if he’d spoken recently to Curb creator Larry David. “I went to see his (Broadway) show in New York and we do talk.” So what about another season of the HBO comedy, following the already announced upcoming eleventh season?

“I certainly would love to.”

Jeff Garlin then called Larry David, “the best guy to do an improvised show with, and it’s been such an honor.” He was later on The Tim Dillon Show and explained his comments, which almost sounded like Curb Your Enthusiasm was done for good. He said this about the possibility of more episodes.

“We could maybe do one more [season], maybe. You know, Larry is in his 70s. Don’t get me wrong, he’s in good shape.”

But Jeff Garlin, who stars on both Curb Your Enthusiasm and The Goldbergs, says that the schedule for him, at age “fifty-f*cking-nine”, is “exhausting.”

“I don’t know if I insulted you,” Jeff Garlin said, turning to The Goldbergs creator/EP Adam Goldberg, who was onstage trying to promote his comedy series. “Larry David is better than me. As much as I wanted to do Goldberg’s show, it was “non-negotiable that I have to be able to do more Curb”. You don’t want to be the one that kills (Curb), and I’m hoping we do more. I’d say there’s a decent chance there will be more episodes.”

“It rips me apart. And the equivalent happens to Larry, cause he’s in every scene, working every day, having to be there at 6:30 in the morning,” added Garlin. “I don’t know if physically he can do more than, let’s say another season. I think he could do another, I don’t know if he has two in him.”

There are two levels to getting another season of Curb to air, the actor explained. First, there’s the “Uhhh, I got an idea, I think I’m gonna write the show – That’s Step 1,” Garlin said. Step 2 is when he’s written six or seven episodes and says, “Yeah, I’ll finish it,” Garlin continued. “Curb is the only show in TV history that only moves forward owing to the creator’s decision based “entirely on creativity,” Garlin said. “Larry David is so goddamned rich he doesn’t have to do anything unless it’s good.”

Since its October 2000 premiere, Curb Your Enthusiasm has remained one of the touchtones of television comedy, earning 47 Emmy nominations and winning two, for outstanding directing for a comedy series in 2003 and outstanding single-camera picture editing for a comedy series in 2012. When asked about HBO officially renewing Curb Your Enthusiasm for an 11th season, Larry David quipped, “Believe me, I’m as upset about this as you are.”

“One day I can only hope that HBO will come to their senses and grant me the cancellation I so richly deserve.” No official release date yet for season 11, but Garlin said in April, of the upcoming season. “I’m filming right now. We have three more weeks left and we’ll have a season that’ll probably come out, I’m guessing, in the fall.” I’m pretty, pretty (you know how it goes)…Excited.
