Kristen Schaal Returns as the Floating Woman

FX has shared some new character portraits showcasing the many faces of What We Do in the Shadows. Of course, this includes portraits of the main crew: Nandor (Kayvan Novak), Laszlo (Matt Berry), Nadja (Natasia Demetriou), Guillermo (Harvey Guillen), and Colin Robinson (Mark Proksch). However, a notable portait showcased Kristen Schaal’s character, who had a brief appearance in season 1 but hasn’t returned since.

Based on the 2014 film from Taika Waititi and Jemaine Clement, What We Do in the Shadows follows the lives of four goofy vampires and their familiar, Guillermo, who live in Staten Island. The latest What We Do in the Shadows season 3 trailer picks up where the last season ended. In season 2, we saw Guillermo coming to terms with being a descendant of Van Helsing, which has given him an uncanny ability to kill vampires.

Schaal can be seen many times during the trailer, suggesting she could have a larger role this season. She first appeared in Season 1, episode 7 titled “The Trail.” In the episode, Schaal works for the vampiric council, who have summoned our three vampires to stand trail for a recent crime. They are found guilty, but end up escaping after being rescued by Colin and Guillermo. After this, the crew is often hunted by assassin vampires who end up being viciously killed by Guillermo.

Now it appears that Nandor and the rest of the gang have become the heads of the vampiric council. Since Schaal worked for the previous council, she may be an employee of the new heads and will assist them in leading the council. Schaal is now credited as “the Guide,” giving her character an official title.

It also looks like there will be a power struggle within the group as they battle to see who will become the supreme leader. Nandor and Nadja specifically reference a potential battle for power in the trailer.

What We Do in the Shadows has had plenty of guest stars including Tilda Swinton, Danny Trejo, Haley Joel Osment, Wesley Snipes, Benedict Wong, and Mark Hamill. However, only a few of the guest stars have appeared more than once. This includes Nick Kroll, who played a rival vampire constantly fighting with Laszlo over a cursed hat and Doug Jones as the Baron Afanas, who wants vampires to dominate the new world.

Schaal brought plenty of laughs to the series in her first appearance so it’s good to see her bringing this character back. Season 3 premieres on Sept. 2 on FX with new episodes going to Hulu the next day.
