Every time summer ends, I’m always caught between grieving the warm weather and getting excited to wear my cool ribbed-knit pieces as the temperature drops. My love of fall fashion feels like a betrayal of my favorite season, but I truly appreciate the sartorial spectacle that takes place on the streets of New York once autumn sets in.

Having to protect ourselves from the cold forces us to think more about the layers we put on, and that’s perhaps what I find most exhilarating about the transition to cooler weather. One style I’ve been particularly looking forward to wearing is the A.L.C. Eleanor Cardigan ($395). I was so excited when I first discovered it, then when it came in the mail last month, I took it on a recent trip to California (of all places).

My philosophy as I approach this season is to do more with less, to collect a few durable, well-made pieces I’ll cherish for a long time. Though this top is a splurge, its wearability and versatility more than make up for it. The soft feel and sultry yet relaxed fit allow for comfortable wear, while the sophisticated look is basically a compliment magnet.

When paired with the matching Logan Rib Knit Pants ($395), it’s the ultimate fall ensemble. The Los Angeles-based brand has perfected the art of making separates I can’t stop raving about, and while you could wear both pieces on their own, you just might not want to.

This fall, consider investing in high-quality, long-lasting pieces that will make you look and feel good.
