Are ‘Star Trek: Lower Decks’ Comics Incoming?

RED ALARM! RED ALARM! Although Star Trek: Lower Decks just finished its second season on Paramount+, Trekkies don’t have to be too concerned because their is light on the other side of the black hole! And it’s not just season three. According to Avery Kaplan at Comics Beat, who first caught wind of the tweet, Lower Decks series creator Mike McMahan has strongly hinted that fans will see a continuation of the series on the comic book page!

According to The Beat, the announcement came courtesy of Twitter user Oleg Ryzhikov, who asked the series creators why fans don’t have any Lower Decks novels or comic books yet. In response to the question, VP of Star Trek Brand Development John Van Citters, responded with, “There are definitely people that know what’s up with that. We’re just pretty good at not leaking stuff.”

There are definitely people that know what’s up with that. We’re just pretty good at not leaking stuff.

Co-creator of the Hulu series Solar Opposites, and more importantly the creator of Star Trek: Lower Decks, the Emmy Award-winning Mike McMahan responded to the Twitter conversation, saying, “Yes we are very good at keeping secrets about Lower Decks books and comics.” McMahan’s response kicked off a short conversation between himself and Van Citters, in which the VP of Development responded, “Hey, doing books and comics might be a pretty good idea. We should talk about that sometime.”

Ugh, if only we had been working on this for ages! What were we thinking?!

McMahan response back seemingly confirms that Star Trek: Lower Decks comics are on the way, saying, “Ugh, if only we had been working on this for ages! What were we thinking?!” As The Beat notes, there are currently no details about when an official Lower Decks comic announcement is coming, but that IDW currently holds the rights to the Star Trek franchise. On Star Trek Day 2021 (September 8th), IDW published the first issue in a year-long comic event, Star Trek: The Mirror War.

In the new series, Celebrated Star Trek comic writers Scott Tipton and David Tipton are delving into the lore of the Mirror Universe, a favorite concept in the fandom, with the help of illustrator Carlos Nieto. Following its launch, IDW says the series “will continue to build year-long tension with issues #1-8 and four interspersed tie-in specials, each highlighting a different member of the Star Trek: Next Generation cast, beginning with Data. “We’re absolutely thrilled to return to the Mirror Universe,” says Scott Tipton. “What’s in store for our Mirror Jean-Luc Picard and his Enterprise crew? New faces, new places, and old grudges. Picard’s ambitions are grander than ever, and nothing short of the throne itself will satisfy him!”

Could IDW’s next comic event be set on the lower decks of the USS Cerritos (NCC-75567)? The finale saw the crew finally working in tandem to overcome great odds, but only to be defeated by their own Starfleet, and on Captain Freeman’s First-First Contact Day, nonetheless! The finale dealt with heavy themes, like family breakups and loss, and left fans hungry for more California-style burritos with Cerritos’ Lower Deckers. Plus, it left open story for comic book creators to explore the new romances developing on board the ship, like the one between Beckett Mariner (Tawny Newsom) and Jennifer the Andorian (Lauren Lapkus), and so much more!

Watch Star Trek: Lower Decks, which includes the 800th Star Trek episode, on Paramount+. This news comes to us from The Beat.
