Andrew Garfield Says His Spider-Man Wouldn’t Get Along with the MCU’s Iron Man

Tony Stark is a father figure of sorts for Peter Parker in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but that doesn’t mean Iron Man would get along with every Spider-Man. Andrew Garfield, who previously played Peter Parker in The Amazing Spider-Man and its sequel, was part of a cinematic universe that didn’t involve The Avengers, and he never got the chance to meet Tony. Some Marvel fans may be curious to know: what would Garfield’s Peter think of Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man?

If you’re asking Garfield himself, the previous Spider-Man would not be quite so friendly with Tony Stark. The Amazing Spider-Man star recently answered questions from fans for a new interview hosted by GQ, and he was asked about what would happen if those characters ever met. Garfield believes that his Peter would be irked by Tony’s ego, though the actor admits that we won’t ever really know for sure.

“I definitely think Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Man would be pretty suspect of MCU Iron Man. I think he would be a little turned off by the excess, the billionaire, trillionaire status of Iron Man. I think it would rub my version of Spider-Man the wrong way. But maybe there could be some influence there. Maybe my Peter Parker could wake Tony Stark up to his own egoic drives a little bit. We’ll never know. We’ll literally never know.”

Perhaps Garfield is right. Even if the rumors are true and Garfield appears in the MCU in Spider-Man: No Way Home, he’s not going to bump into Tony Stark. Robert Downey Jr.’s run in that role came to an apparent end in Avengers: Endgame, and the actor seems to have already put the role behind him. You never really know what can happen in the multiverse, but it seems incredibly unlikely those two characters will ever cross paths on the big screen.

Andrew Garfield has also been adamantly denying the rumors that he appears in No Way Home. From the start of production, there have been rumblings of the actor reprising his version of Peter Parker alongside Tobey Maguire to essentially recreate Into the Spider-Verse in live-action. The most recent trailer revealed supervillains from both of those actors’ respective movie universes, but neither was shown directly, leading some fans to wonder if the two really won’t be in the sequel, leaving Tom Holland’s Spidey to take on those villains alone.

“Listen, I’m not in the film,” Garfield said on Today. “I love Spider-Man, I always have. I was so happy to have played the part, and I’m so excited to see what they do with the third one, just like you guys are, to be honest. No, that’s not a diplomatic answer. I really, really mean it. I love Tom Holland. I love Jon Watts. I love Amy Pascal and Kevin Feige and what they’ve done with those movies and that character. It’s an important character to me. So I’m just really excited to see what happens in the third one, as you guys are.”

For the most part, fans aren’t buying Garfield’s denials. At this point, it would be a tremendous shock if the other two Spider-Men do not appear in the movie. We’ll find out for sure when the sequel is released on Dec. 17, 2021. This news comes to us from GQ.
