No Way Home Projections Set for $500 Million Worldwide Opening

Spider-Man: No Way Home was always expected to be the savior of 2021’s box office, and latest opening weekend estimates have not disappointed.

Everyone expects Spider-Man: No Way Home to be the biggest success of the pandemic era, but latest predictions for opening weekend have estimated the movie will bring in more than double the amount most movies of the last 18 months made throughout their entire cinematic run. Latest projections from Box Office Pro, shared on Twitter by Charlie Jatinder, have suggested that the latest Marvel outing for Spider-Man is heading towards a $200 million or above opening weekend domestically, and a possible $500 million worldwide debut.

With the arrival of the Omicron COVID-19 variant, there had been a few small jitters about whether this would see a bit of a drop in the number of people willing to go and sit in a dark room with a lot of strangers for the sake of seeing Spider-Man: No Way Home on its debut, but with almost $60 million of presale tickets already sold, $40 million of which are from the film’s opening day, it seems that this is one film that COVID-19 is not going to stop. With these presales taken into account, the film is tracking an opening of at least $200-240 million, and in the last few weeks this type of estimate has proved to be lower than the action figures, so there is no doubt that Marvel and Sony must be already celebrating at the end of an up and down year for the MCU output.

MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY

There are obviously a lot of issues with making this kind of prediction in the last six months, but generally they have been reasonably accurate, so there is no reason to believe that Spider-Man will fare any different. Currently, Marvel’s three releases of Black Widow, Shang-Chi and the Legend of The Ten Rings and Eternals, have all opened with reasonable $80 million upward grosses, but if there was one movie that would dominate the box office in the current climate, then Spider-Man: No Way Home was always going to be the one to do it. If these predictions turn out to be on point, then it is going to show a huge resurgence in audiences returning to theaters for the right movie.

Spider-Man: No Way Home features Tom Holland’s Peter Parker coming face to face with a number of villains from previous Spider-Man Universes, including the Green Gobin, Doc Ock, Sandman, Lizard and Electro, as well as a host of much denied but still almost certain rumors about the return of Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire to their respective Spider-Men roles. Between this and Doctor Strange seemingly being the true instigator of the multiverse, there is a lot to unpack in the two-and-a-half-hours long movie and more than enough reason for Marvel fans to head back to cinemas.

The film is released on December 15th in the U.K. and some other overseas territories, before making its U.S. debut on the 17th. With just over a week to go, Marvel have started stepping up their marketing promos, with rumors that new international trailer is coming just prior to the film’s arrival next week.
