Kiernan Shipka Talks Riverdale Crossover and Sabrina Spellman’s Future

For fans of the famous Archie comics, news of the one and only Sabrina Spellman making her way into the town of Riverdale has been an absolute thrill. The long-awaited crossover of Greendale and Riverdale residents finally occurred this past Tuesday when Sabrina joined Cheryl Blossom in the latest episode of Riverdale. Kiernan Shipka, the actress who plays Sabrina Spellman, revived the iconic role a year after the original show, The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, had come to an end. Shipka recently had a chat with EW about her time on Riverdale and any future comings for her character, Sabrina.

“There was always the hope of a crossover, so to get to be Sabrina again was a treat,” Shipka said. “It was a thrill. Also to go over to the set and do it for a few days and really have some fun with it, versus it being my full-time job, was really interesting. I did quite literally, in theme with Rivervale, feel like I was in an alternate universe. [Laughs] It was wonderful. I enjoyed every minute of it.”

MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY

Sabrina Spellman in the original show, The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, ends up dying after a battle against the Void where the character sacrifices herself to save her family and friends. So fans must be wondering how Sabrina is alive in one town, but dead in another. And to that, Kiernan Shipka says, “We get hints, but I think a lot of is left unsaid and a lot of questions are still up in the air as to how Sabrina’s back and how it all went down. I have my theories and I think everyone will chime in with theirs, but hopefully, down the line, we get some explanation.”

In Riverdale, Sabrina is said to be much older than her character in CAOS as it is set in the future. The not so teenage witch is about twenty-something in age, therefore, much wiser. When asked what the biggest change in Sabrina is now due to her being an adult, Shipka says, “One of Sabrina’s most charming qualities was the fact that she was young and made a lot of mistakes because she was still learning the ropes and learning everything, as you do when you’re that age, and obviously you never stop making mistakes, but you do grow and you do become a different person. Bringing a sense of maturity to Sabrina that we hadn’t previously seen was something that I was very excited to do. That’s the most palpable difference.”

Sabrina’s role in the world of Riverdale mostly comes due to the chaotic mess that has been created in the town. With so many things going on at once in the new season, where does Sabrina fit into all this? In the season 6 previews of the show, Greendale’s favorite witch is seen coercing with the one and only Cheryl Blossom. “We really just see Sabrina with Cheryl. The big reveal of Sabrina happens and shortly thereafter she is spellcasting with Cheryl Blossom,” said Shipka. “It’s very fun. It’s definitely established as a dynamic duo.”

“I feel like since episode 1 of CHAOS we’ve been talking about doing a crossover with Riverdale, and finally the stars aligned and I think that it was absolutely the right timing. I was always itching to get over there. But it makes sense that it’s after the fact and that it’s now, and I’m happy that it’s extended the life of Sabrina, so timing really did work out at the end of the day.” explained Shipka when asked about her experience in Riverdale so far.

Although there are no signs of Salem being seen in the new season, we can only hope to see Sabrina’s familiar in the future. And hopefully, more of Sabrina Spellman as well.

“I think the door is open, and that’s very exciting.”

You can watch Riverdale Tuesdays on The CW and catch up on seasons 1-5 on Netflix.
