The King’s Man Director Is Working on an R-Rated Game Show

Matthew Vaughn is already working on a new Kingsman sequel, but has revealed that he has also filmed a pilot for a new adult game show

People will say that there are no surprises left in the entertainment industry, but news that Matthew Vaughn is bringing a new R-rated quiz show to TV is certainly one of them. Vaughn is finally seeing his new movie The King’s Man arrive in cinemas this Christmas to a less than glowing response from critics and early audiences. While his original Kingsman: The Secret Service was a huge hit, the sequel wasn’t quite as well-received, but he will be hoping to put all that right with the newly announced third movie heading into production. Now it seems Vaughn has been exploring a completely new avenue for his directorial talents.

The TV game show has been a staple of network schedules since the 1950s, but other than one or two exceptions they have been firmly rooted in “family friendly” territory. However, in recent years there have been whispers of new formats attempting to buck the trend, and while they have never made it to screen, studios are starting to look at more unique ideas to regenerate the game show for a new audience. The Harry Potter-inspired Tournament of the Houses is one such example of a well-known IP being brought into the game show arena, and with many older formats being seen as dull and dated in the modern landscape, Vaughn’s new project seems that it could be a breath of fresh air.

While talking to Collider about his future projects after The King’s Man, Vaughn commented on his new venture, but only in a very vague and teasing way, as he did admit that he couldn’t go into any in depth details about it. “And we’re making a TV…reinvented the quiz show, believe it or not. We just shot the pilot last week. I’m gonna do the first R-rated quiz show. I can’t say much about it. But I’m watching the edit later on today,” he said.

As well as working on the Kingsman series of films, Vaughn has also had a hand in several other successful projects including Stardust, Rocketman and the Kick-Ass franchise, so he has delivered a variety of genres as both director and producer, which makes a TV show even more of an exciting prospect to see what he is going to come up with. While there is a lot of scope over where exactly an “R-rated” format could take, it looks like we will have to wait for some official word to come down the line.

Meanwhile, the Vaughn-directed The King’s Man is all set to hit cinemas on December 22nd, but with very mixed reviews and going up against the might of Spider-Man: No Way Home and The Matrix Resurrections, it looks like it is going to have a rough run in cinemas. If anything a poor showing in theaters for the Ralph Fiennes and Gemma Arterton-led prequel will likely see it arrive on streaming services earlier than expected where it may have a bit more of a fighting chance to find its audience.
