Hawkeye Directors Say Working With Vincent D’Onofrio was a Treat

Hawkeye saw the return of Marvel’s Kingpin in the form of Daredevil star Vincent D’Onofrio, and the directors loved bringing him back to the screen.

Being an actor in a Marvel production, both on the big and small screen, is surely one of the only jobs in the world where part of your contract says you must deny everything, always. Having watched Andrew Garfield explicitly refute reports, images and footage of his involvement in Spider-Man: No Way Home, the final two episodes of Hawkeye on Disney+ were preceded by weeks of similar denials by former Daredevil star Vincent D’Onofrio that he was about make his version of Wilson “Kingpin” Fisk canon in the MCU. Of course, episode five’s big reveal saw those lies fall away and another actor gets to finally admit to their involvement in a Marvel project.

MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY

The series of Hawkeye essentially revolves around Clint Barton’s attempts to make it home to his family for Christmas, with the Avenger and young protégé Kate Bishop being constantly caught up in a number of high stakes events that all threaten Barton getting to those roasting chestnuts by the time the big day arrives. However, fans have been very much distracted by a bigger event going on in terms of MCU continuity with whispers that Kingpin would not only feature in the series but would also bring back D’Onofrio to reprise his role from the now defunct Marvel Television Daredevil series on Netflix.

Fans have often questioned whether the “other” Marvel series’ were MCU canon, and those questions as far as Daredevil goes have been well and truly answered in the last week. For the directors behind the Hawkeye series, Bert and Bertie, being the ones to make that connection and to work with D’Onofrio was “a treat.” While talking to The Hollywood Reporter, the pair said:

“We were lucky enough to work with him and to share time and space with him. He is the most remarkable actor, the way he holds space. That was a treat. That was one of our favorite days on set.”

Bertie also elaborated on what it was like to have the “fan-favorite” back on board the MCU.

“It means so much. not just logistically for the world. But just the level of intense sociopathic, evilness. (Laughs.) Which is the real stake. There have been stakes building throughout Hawkeye. It starts off very fun and games and the Tracksuits and the introduction of Maya Lopez and there’s Yelena and it just keeps getting more intense. It’s wonderful being part of this show that starts as one thing and it just escalates until these tones merge, so we can go from laughing your heart out to gripping the edge of your seat.”

While the end of the episode saw Kingpin “being shot” by Echo, we know that Marvel has a way of not necessarily keeping all of these off-screen events as gospel going forward, and whether this will play a part in the recently announced Disney+ Echo series or not, it is certainly not likely that we have seen the last of D’Onofrio’s crime lord and fans will eagerly await news of where his character could appear next with anticipation.
