Patrick Wilson Says Aquaman Sequel ‘Finds Its Place In The Multiverse’

While Marvel Studios has given fans a few hints as to where their multiverse is heading, at least for now, DC has been a bit vaguer on how their multiverse is coming together, with only the upcoming The Flash known to explicitly feature multiple timelines with the return of Michael Keaton’s Batman. However, Aquaman 2 star Patrick Wilson has been suggesting that the second outing for the aquatic hero has also found its place in the multiverse, but of course, he wasn’t going into specifics.

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom will arrive in cinemas this December, and other than seeing the return of many characters from the first movie, including Jason Momoa’s titular Justice League member, Amber Heard, Dolph Lungren and Nicole Kidman among others, we know very little about the actual content of the film. In a recent interview with Collider, Wilson was happy to talk about the movie vaguely and explained that there will be some surprises in store for fans.

“So you take those things that you think people responded to, even if it was, Oh my God, can you believe they did that?” he said. “Yeah, we did that. Now we’re going to do more of that. I think we found our niche. I think DC has found their way to understand where each movie can fit, even in a multiverse, which is so overused now, as a term. Clearly the movie went beyond a fanboy demographic because it made whatever; billion dollars, right? So that affords you a freedom of, ‘You know what? Let’s keep it fun. Let’s make it fun.'”

Aquaman’s Sequel Will Push Boundaries and Deliver ‘Never Before Seen’ Visual Effects

After fourteen years of huge Marvel Spectacles and a decade of the DCEU, movies have to go some way to really make jaws drop. However, Wilson promised that Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom will deliver things that fans have never seen before. “We push all the fighting and the stunts,” he said. “We’ve used crazy techniques between us and The Flash that have never been used before.”

When it came to specifics of the movie though, Wilson was tight-lipped as you would expect. “[I’m] obviously not going to get into that,” he said. “But James loves to pick and choose from his own mind and comics and how we bring in certain elements.”

Back in December, around the time Jason Momoa announced that filming on the sequel had wrapped, Warner Bros. released an official synopsis for the movie that reads: “When an ancient power is unleashed, Aquaman must forge an uneasy alliance with an unlikely ally to protect Atlantis, and the world, from irreversible devastation.” Of course, as well as Wilson’s return as Ocean Master, we also know that Yahya Abdul-Mateen II will also be back in his role as Black Manta, meaning that either or both of these characters could be seen teaming up with Momoa’s Aquaman and others to prevent a new disaster.

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom will arrive in cinemas on December 16th, 2022.
