Uncharted Box Office Projections Place it Higher Than Mortal Kombat

After a lengthy development with constant delays, Uncharted is swinging into theaters this weekend, and box office projections are looking good. The projections already put the video game adaptation ahead of the recent Mortal Kombat film.

Uncharted is Tom Holland’s latest collaboration with Sony after Spider-Man: No Way Home, which recently just became the third highest-grossing domestic film of all time. Holland plays Nathan Drake, a young treasure hunter who is on the hunt for long-lost gold. Along for the ride is Victor “Sully” Sullivan (Mark Wahlberg), Drake’s new mentor. The two hope to find the treasure before the ruthless Santiago Moncada (Antonio Banderas) gets his hands on it. Uncharted is directed by Ruben Fleischer (Zombieland, Venom) with a script penned by Rafe Lee Judkins, Art Marcum, and Matt Holloway.

MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY

According to box office projections from Deadline, the industry is projecting the movie could hit within $35-40 million for the whole 4-day weekend, which includes Thursday and President’s Day on Monday. Sony is projecting that Uncharted will earn around $30 million within that same time frame. In addition, the film is expected to earn an additional $70+ million worldwide after earning $22 million in its first weekend in foreign markets.

Uncharted is Projected to Gross Between $35 and $40 Million

The last major video game adaptation, Mortal Kombat, distributed by Warner Bros., was projected to earn around $10-$12 million but surpassed expectations, earning about $23 million. The film did pretty well, considering it had to overcome several obstacles, including the pandemic and being released on HBO Max the same day. However, Mortal Kombat performed well enough to be greenlit for a sequel.

When compared to Uncharted, Mortal Kombat also didn’t have any major stars that could bring in a larger audience. Holland is incredibly popular right now and could bring in audiences who just want to see him. Uncharted also doesn’t have any legitimate competitors at the box office right now, and it won’t have any until The Batman releases on March 4.

Uncharted does have a budget of $120 million that it needs to overcome, so hopefully, the film has some legs as well following this weekend. Unfortunately, reviews from critics aren’t great so far, but plenty of people are saying the film is at least thoroughly entertaining. If audiences have a good time with the film, then word-of-mouth could also help with pushing people towards the theaters. It is also a popular video game series that will certainly get fans to come out and give it a chance. We’ll have to wait and see if Drake and Sully are able to find box office gold.
