Three Lesser-Known Benefits of Skiing

You’re probably aware that skiing is great exercise. If you watched the HomeLight-sponsored US Ski Team at the 2022 Beijing Olympics, you might’ve noticed that those athletes are in great shape!

That’s because skiing is great exercise. It’s a cardio workout that burns major calories. It also works a wide range of muscle groups, including your hamstrings, quads, calves, glutes, and core. If you’re looking to shape up and tone your body, skiing can really whip you into shape.

Sure, skiing is a fantastic workout. But it also has several benefits you might not know about, including reducing anxiety, getting you into the Great Outdoors, and helping you see new places.

  • Reduce Stress and Anxiety

  • Physical exercise is known for its physical and mental health benefits because it reduces your level of the stress hormone cortisol. Skiing in particular is emerging as a fantastic way to reduce anxiety and its symptoms. According to a study published in 2021, skiers are around 60% less likely to develop anxiety disorders than non-skiers.

Because skiing is often associated with vacations—you’re probably familiar with the ever-popular “ski trip”—some people immediately associate skiing with relaxing and reducing their tension levels. If you’re looking for a place to unwind from your hectic daily life, skiing is a great way to reduce some stress and stay in shape.

  • Spend Time Outdoors

  • Nature makes us happy. Whether you’re hiking through a national park or walking your dog around your neighborhood, fresh air does everybody good. And since skiing is generally an outdoor activity, you get to experience everything that Mother Nature has to offer.

Many people tend to stay indoors during the cold winter months. But if you’ve ever been skiing, you know that those folks are missing out! Skiers get to enjoy every glistening mountain and every snow-dressed tree. So get out there, strap on some skis, and enjoy all the outdoors!

  • See New Places

  • Some of the most beautiful places around the world are known for skiing. Think Whistler, Canada, Courchevel, France, and Zermatt, Switzerland, just to name a few famous skiing locations. Even if you don’t have international wanderlust, as long as you live in a climate that gets snow a few months a year, you can see some amazing sights at any ski resort.

If you’re more of a skiing observer than a participant, this sport can still help you travel—and see some world-class athletes! Keep an eye on the US Ski Team’s upcoming events. You might find your dream vacation on their list of competitions. And when you feel like it, strap on those skis and hit the powder yourself!

Skiing is a strenuous workout, so make sure to consult your doctor before you ski. And then, go at your own pace! Whether you prefer cross-country skiing or hitting the slopes, you’ll get to reap the many benefits of this international sport.
