Obi-Wan Kenobi is already bringing back Darth Vader, but it looks like the series could also see former allies of Kenobi returning as foes.
Star Wars series Obi-Wan Kenobi is still a couple of months away, but the hype and expectation on the latest Disney+ show from the franchise is already building. With the promise of “the rematch of the century” between the former Jedi Master and his once apprentice Anakin Skywalker aka Darth Vader, a return to some familiar locations from the Star Wars canon and many secrets still to reveal, a new synopsis for the series has now hinted at more familiar characters from Obi-Wan’s past making a comeback to the franchise, although they might not all be on his side.
The latest synopsis revealed by Disney+ gives a strong sense of the trials that will be facing Ewan McGregor’s Jedi in the series that picks up his story ten years on from the events of Revenge of The Sith, and that fateful duel with Anakin Skywalker. The blurb reads:
MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY
“During the reign of the Galactic Empire, former Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi embarks on a crucial mission. Kenobi must confront allies turned enemies and face the wrath of the Empire.”
We already know that Hayden Christensen will be back to reprise his role as Vader in the series, but with rumors circulating around the possible return of the likes of Liam Neeson’s Qui Gon Jinn and others, there are still a lot of unknowns about the series, including that crucial mission Obi-Wan will be undertaking as the main plot of the limited series. With The Mandalorian having set such a high standard for Star Wars series, and The Book of Boba Fett having slightly underperformed against expectation if not in audience volumes, all eyes are now on Obi-Wan Kenobi to try and steady the ship for the franchise’s Disney+ output in the future.

Obi-Wan Kenobi May Have a Story To Tell, But Does The Series Rest On That Darth Vader Rematch
Obi-Wan Kenobi has gone through many changes since the project was first envisioned as a “Star Wars Story” movie, and there have been times that it looked like the Jedi Master would not make his return to screens at all. However, the series is now almost here and is looking to bridge a narrative gap between Revenge of The Sith and A New Hope, but is the overshadowing promise of that “rematch of the century” going to hinder rather than help the series?
Having made his first appearance in the opening scenes of Star Wars in 1977, Darth Vader has been a dominant presence throughout the film saga. While Vader and Obi-Wan have appeared many times across the Star Wars movies and TV series, their duals in Revenge of The Sith and A New Hope are two of the most iconic moments of the franchise. For that reason, their third and potentially final face-off – in terms of release if not chronology – is going to be a stand-out moment of the upcoming show.
With the meeting likely being held back for the finale of the series, there will be a lot of story to tell before that, and the real question is whether the payoff of a Vader/Kenobi battle will be enough to make the series a success or whether a movie would have been a better way for Obi-Wan Kenobi’s tale to be told after all.
