The highly-anticipated limited series, Obi-Wan Kenobi, will finally see the return of Ewan McGregor as the legendary Jedi Master. Also set to return in the upcoming Disney+ series, is none other than Hayden Christensen himself, starring as the infamous Darth Vader. During a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, director Deborah Chow teases that fans will get to see a different side of Darth Vader in the upcoming series. Obi-Wan Kenobi will join the ranks of the Star Wars original programming on Disney+ alongside The Book of Boba Fett, The Mandalorian, Star Wars: The Bad Batch, and Star Wars: Visions.

“For us, it’s very similar [to Obi-Wan] in the sense that he’s in between these two trilogies,” Chow expressed to EW. “So he isn’t the New Hope Vader quite yet, you know what I mean? So we are with the character sort of in the middle of this period. It is still Vader obviously, but it’s a Vader that isn’t quite as fully formed as A New Hope.”
While Darth Vader has had several appearances in both animation and live-action, the upcoming series will certainly explore the character emotionally. With no confirmed reports of just how much screen time Darth Vader will have on the show, director Deborah Chow truly believes that the relationship between both characters is an important part of their story. Ewan McGregor and Hayden Christensen both last appeared as their characters together in Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith back in 2005. “Honestly, for me the starting place was that I really wanted to do something that was character-based and character-driven, because that is the benefit of the limited series, is that you have more time to sort of tell a real character story,” the filmmaker explained. “And so for me, the starting place of character is you just start, and you look at who has been important to him in his life. And it’s quite hard to avoid Anakin/Vader in that scenario, especially coming out of Revenge of the Sith.” She added, “So really it came out of an evolution of the character for me. It wasn’t just to sort of bring him back. It was really like, who means something and where are we at this point in the timeline with Vader?”
Everything We Know About Obi-Wan Kenobi, So Far
Obi-Wan Kenobi is an upcoming American limited series developed for streaming on Disney+ featuring the Star Wars character of the same name. The series is written by Joby Harold and directed by Deborah Chow. The official synopsis for the upcoming reads as, during the reign of the Galactic Empire, former Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi embarks on a crucial mission. Kenobi must confront allies turned enemies and face the wrath of the Empire. The series will bring back Ewan McGregor, Hayden Christensen, Joel Edgerton, and Bonnie Piesse.
Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy had revealed how McGregor and Christensen’s reunion turned into an emotional moment, and how they were excited to step back into their iconic roles once again (and hopefully not for the last time). “The thing that was most exciting was being on the set and watching the two of them get excited,” Kennedy told Empire magazine. “They hadn’t seen one another in a long time. I was surprised at just how incredibly emotional it was for each of them to find themselves back in these roles, and just realizing how important Star Wars was to each of them. It was the beginning of their careers.”
Obi-Wan Kenobi is currently scheduled to be released on May 25. The upcoming limited series will consist of a total of six episodes. Obi-Wan Kenobi is directed by Deborah Chow and executive-produced by Kathleen Kennedy, Michelle Rejwan, Deborah Chow, Ewan McGregor and Joby Harold. Star Wars composer John Williams wrote the main theme for the series.
