The Rings of Power Takes Heavy Inspiration from the Books

Amazon Studios

This new TV series adaptation of The Lord of the Rings comes with some heavy investment from Amazon, with the budget requiring upwards of $400 million. It would seem that the hope is for the series, which has also already been renewed for a second season, to launch a new franchise that can compete with or even best the success achieved by HBO with Game of Thrones. The show’s creators leaned heavily into Tolkien mythology hoping that will help the show click better with fans.

“I just want to sort of quibble with the ‘vaguely connected.’ We don’t feel that way,” the show’s co-creator Patrick McKay previously said. “We feel like deep roots of this show are in the books and in Tolkien. And if we didn’t feel that way, we’d all be terrified to sit up here. We feel that this story isn’t ours. It’s a story we’re stewarding that was here before us and was waiting in those books to be on Earth. We don’t feel ‘vaguely connected.’ We feel deeply, deeply connected to those folks and work every day to even be closer connected. That’s really how we think about it.”

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power will make its streaming premiere on Sept. 2, 2022, on Prime Video. After the first two episodes premiere on that date, new episodes will debut every subsequent Friday; the first season consists of eight episodes total.
