Scream 6 Star Calls the Slasher Sequel More Mortifying & More Awful Than Ever

Scream 6 will be far more “mortifying” than anything that has come before, declares star Melissa Barrera. Speaking with Collider, Barrera, who joined the slasher franchise in this year’s Scream aka Scream 5, described how the change of setting from Woodsboro, California, to New York City will increase the terror that will once again be carried out by Ghostface.

“It’s, like 20 times more mortifying. It’s awful. Because you also see how, in a city like New York City, everyone is kind of doing their own thing and someone is screaming for help, and no one will come to their help. No one comes to help them, you know, like, everyone’s kind of like, “I’m not getting into that.” So it’s mortifying, because you’re chased by Ghostface, but you also see humanity and how that reacts in a situation like that. Anyway, I think I’ve already probably said too much.”

While the actress quickly realized that she may have revealed far too much already, Barrera explained how being chased by Ghostface is so much scarier in New York compared to Woodsboro. In New York City, it seems, everyone is far too busy to notice when a knife-wielding killer is on the loose. Take note, do not rely on the kindness of strangers in the world of Scream.

Though Melissa Barrera felt she had said too much about the direction of Scream 6, it has already been revealed that the slasher sequel will see Melissa Barrera, Jenna Ortega, Jasmin Savoy Brown, and Mason Gooding return to reprise their roles from this year’s Scream outing. Following their experience with the infamous slasher in Scream 5, you can’t really blame them for wanting to leave the horrors of Woodsboro behind. Though sadly, it doesn’t sound like putting down roots in New York City will turn out much better.

Filming on Scream 6 Has Now Wrapped

Paramount Pictures

Filming on Scream 6 recently wrapped, with production union AQTIS 514 IATSE taking to social media to share a large photo of the cast and crew alongside the caption, “It’s in the box! Shooting for the #Scream6 film has now ended. Well done to the Thunder team! We’d also like to thank producer Ron Lynch and #Montréal for choosing @blackmore.productions as their city to shoot.”

Alongside the return of Scream stars Melissa Barrera, Jenna Ortega, Jasmin Savoy Brown, and Mason Gooding, Scream 6 sees Scream 4 star Hayden Panettiere reprises the role of Kirby Reed, a survivor of the 2011 Ghostface serial murders. Unfortunately, for the first time in the franchise, Neve Campbell’s Sidney Prescott will not appear in Scream 6.

“Sadly I won’t be making the next Scream film,” Campbell revealed. “As a woman, I have had to work extremely hard in my career to establish my value, especially when it comes to Scream. I felt the offer that was presented to me did not equate to the value I have brought to the franchise.”

Directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, who are known collectively as Radio Silence, written by James Vanderbilt and Guy Busick, and starring Melissa Barrera, Jenna Ortega, Jasmin Savoy Brown, Mason Gooding, Courteney Cox, Hayden Panettiere, and Dermot Mulroney, Scream 6 is scheduled to be released on March 31, 2023.
