Blade Runner 2099 Series Officially Greenlit from Amazon Studios

Blade Runner is returning to the spotlight with the upcoming series from Amazon Studios and Prime Video, Blade Runner 2099. According to a report from Deadline, the show has officially received the green light. Ridley Scott is set to serve as executive producer on the series, with the filmmaker helming the original 1982 Blade Runner movie. As the title suggests, Blade Runner 2099 will take place 50 years after Denis Villeneuve’s venture into the universe with the 2017 film Blade Runner 2049.

The upcoming show will be the first live-action series set in the Blade Runner universe, as Blade Runner: Black Lotus premiered in 2021 on Adult Swim and Crunchyroll as an animated show. Vernon Sanders, head of global television at Amazon Studios, released a statement regarding 2099. He says, “The original Blade Runner, directed by Ridley Scott, is considered one of the greatest and most influential science-fiction movies of all time, and we’re excited to introduce Blade Runner 2099 to our global Prime Video customers.” He continues, “We are honored to be able to present this continuation of the Blade Runner franchise, and are confident that by teaming up with Ridley, Alcon Entertainment, Scott Free Productions, and the remarkably talented Silka Luisa, Blade Runner 2099 will uphold the intellect, themes, and spirit of its film predecessors.”

Will Blade Runner 2099 Be an Entirely New Plot?

Warner Bros.

The two Blade Runner films are some of the most beloved science fiction movies ever to be released. The first, based upon the novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? by Philip K. Dick, follows Harrison Ford’s character set in a dystopian Los Angeles in 2019. Rick Deckard (Ford) is forced out of retirement to hunt four genetically engineered humans, known as replicants, after they flee their space colonies and return to Earth.

The sequel, Blade Runner 2049, follows replicant blade runner K (Ryan Gosling), who uncovers a secret that threatens to destabilize society, forcing him to track down Rick Deckard from the initial film. The exact plot details for the series aren’t known but if 2099 is anything like the first two films, expect plenty of tension between replicants and humans and themes surrounding mortality and humanity. Alcon Entertainment co-CEOs and co-founders Andrew Kosove and Broderick Johnson discussed the upcoming series, saying they recognize the films’ influence and importance and want the forthcoming Blade Runner 2099 to live up to the expectations from the franchise.

Blade Runner 2099 is undoubtedly several years away, at the least, from any form of release. However, you can continue to look out for casting announcements and news as development on the series begins to ramp up.
