Johnny Depp v. Amber Heard Movie Trailer Recreates the Hollywood Trial of the Century

The official trailer has been released for Hot Take: The Depp/Heard Trial. Because the widely-viewed trial had generated so much publicity during the six weeks it was televised, it’s something many have called “Hollywood’s Trial of the Century.” Involving Johnny Depp and Amber Heard both suing one another amid allegations of domestic violence and abuse, the trial ultimately concluded with the jury siding heavily in Depp’s favor… but did they make the right call? Both sides of the story are explored in the new film, as you can see by watching the trailer below.

A Tubi Original Movie from Fox Entertainment’s MarVista Entertainment, Hot Take: The Depp/Heard Trial is obviously based on the controversial defamation trial that took the entire world by storm for six weeks. Actors have been brought in to play key figures in the trial, including Mark Hapka (Parallels) as Johnny Depp, Megan Davis (Alone in the Dark) as Amber Heard, Melissa Marty (Station 19) as Depp’s lawyer Camille Vasquez, and Mary Carrig (Law & Order: True Crime) as Heard’s lawyer Elaine Bredehoft.

Why Is This Movie Coming Out So Soon?

It may feel like the trial had just ended for many, and that a movie based on it is already coming out might seem surprising for some. The reason that this is happening is because the execs at Tubi wanted to strike the iron while it was hot, so to speak. With the trial generating so much publicity, there were plans that were quickly put in place to turn the events of the trial into a movie. The film itself was then fast-tracked and now it’s going to be available to stream just months after the end of the televised fiasco.

“Hot Take: The Depp/Heard Trial is one of many timely, culturally relevant original movies to come from our expanding partnership and slate of movies being produced in collaboration with Tubi,” Hannah Pillemer, EVP creative of affairs for MarVista, said in a statement when the film was announced. “Connecting viewers to stories with this kind of social currency and topicality make watching them a must for any fan of pop culture or celebrity drama.”

Tubi’s chief content officer is also quoted as saying that the movie was developed quickly to “capture a timely take on a story that became part of the cultural zeitgeist, painting a unique picture of what millions watched play out in the headlines over the summer.”

Hot Take: The Depp/Heard Trial will be available to stream for free on Tubi starting on Sept. 30, 2022. Meanwhile, the legal battle is not completely over just yet, as both Depp and Heard have formally appealed the verdict. Whether anything changes as a result remains to be seen.
