Star Wars Fans Want Christian Bale as Live-Action Thrawn

If Christian Bale is going to spark a conversation about how he could join the Star Wars franchise, many fans will respond by calling for his casting as a live-action incarnation of Grand Admiral Thrawn. Recently, Bale shared his thoughts on Star Wars and named an interesting choice for a desired role to play in that universe. Speaking with THR, the actor said he’d just be happy to play the Stormtrooper that hits his head on a doorway, but that he’s open to taking on a bigger role.

“All I ever wanted in Star Wars was to be in a Star Wars outfit and hit my head on a door or something as I walked through,” Bale said. “The real nerds who watched Star Wars way too many times always knew about that one scene where the Stormtrooper hits his head on the door as he comes through. I wanted to be that guy. That was it.”

He added, “But look, if I’m fortunate enough to be more than that, oh man, yeah. What a delight that would be. I’ve still got the figures from when I was little. I also know Kathy Kennedy very well because she was working with Spielberg when I did Empire of the Sun, and now, she runs the Star Wars universe.”

With Bale teasing that a Star Wars debut could be on the horizon, many fans have been offering choices of characters the Thor: Love and Thunder star could potentially play. One popular pick is the live-action version of Grand Admiral Thrawn. Some fans are taking to social media to suggest this casting, getting many other Star Wars fans to agree. There has even been some fan artwork getting shared to further sell other fans on the concept of Bale as Thrawn.

When Will Grand Admiral Thrawn Make His Live-Action Star Wars Debut?

Originally appearing in a series of novels in the 1990s, which saw him serving as a foe to major characters like Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, and Han Solo, Thrawn was further popularized when he was featured in the animated series Star Wars Rebels. Fans have been expecting to see him in live-action form after the character was mentioned by Ahsoka Tano (Rosario Dawson) in The Mandalorian, but as of now, it’s unclear when the character may appear and who might be playing him, but there have been some different rumors over the years.

The animated version of the character is voiced by Lars Mikkelsen. That has led to some rumors that the actor will also play the live-action Thrawn. Meanwhile, Doctor Strange star Benedict Cumberbatch is another actor whose name is attached to the role in the rumor mill. The speculation over his potential casting even made its way to Cumberbatch himself, who told Collider in 2021 that he wasn’t all that familiar with the character, nor did he want to turn himself blue for a role at that time.

“That’s a straight no from me, right now. There’s no way I want to be turned blue,” Cumberbatch said. “I turned the air blue, very recently. No no, seriously, I have precious time with my children and I think sitting in a makeup chair and being painted blue, and the amount of time it would take to do that and then take it off at the end of the day might just… it’s not the right time in my life for that.”

It does seem inevitable that Thrawn will pop up in live-action sooner or later, but we’ll just have to wait and see who gets that role. For now, many fans are continuing their campaign for Christian Bale.
