Jo Koy and Jay Chandrasekhar Talk Making Easter Sunday in BTS Clip

Comedian Jo Koy’s new film Easter Sunday is coming to Blu-ray and DVD on Oct. 18, and ahead of the home media release, we can debut an exclusive clip from behind the scenes of the film. In the clip, footage of the film is featured alongside Koy and director Jay Chandrasekhar speaking about what went into making the movie. You can watch the video below.

“It’s literally my life,” Koy says of the movie’s inspiration. “We’re showing a little bit of love, family, culture, chaos, and it all takes place on one day: Easter Sunday.”

“Jo is acting in his first film,” Chandrasekhar adds. “His stand-up act is really centered on his family and the wild characters in his family. His mom is guilt-tripping him into coming home to Daily City, California, which is sort of the center of West Filipino culture.”

MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY

Koy is one of many comedy all-stars appearing in Easter Sunday. The film also includes Jimmy O. Yang (Silicon Valley), Tia Carrere (Wayne’s World), Brandon Wardell (Curb Your Enthusiasm), Tony nominee Eva Noblezada (Broadway’s Hadestown), Lydia Gaston (Broadway’s The King and I), Asif Ali (WandaVision), Rodney To (Parks and Recreation), Eugene Cordero (The Good Place), Tiffany Haddish (Girls Trip), and Lou Diamond Phillips (Courage Under Fire). Chandrasekhar (I Love You, Man) also appears in the film.

From DreamWorks Pictures, Easter Sunday is directed by Chandrasekhar (Super Troopers, The Dukes of Hazzard) using a screenplay by Ken Cheng (Wilfred, Betas). It is produced by Ridebak’s Dan Lin (The Lego Movie, It) and Jonathan Eirich (Aladdin, The Two Popes). Koy executive produces with Jessica Gao, Jimmy O. Yang, Ken Cheng, Joe Meloche, Nick Reynolds, and Seth William Meier.

The official synopsis for Easter Sunday reads:

Stand-up comedy sensation Jo Koy (Jo Koy: In His Elements, Jo Koy: Comin’ in Hot) stars as a man returning home for an Easter celebration with his riotous, bickering, eating, drinking, laughing, loving family, in this love letter to his Filipino-American community.

Koy has long been a draw in comedy, but it hasn’t been until Easter Sunday came along for him to get the chance to star in his own movie. In a recent interview with Forbes, he addressed how he struggled looking for the opportunity in Hollywood for years, as he was always told there wasn’t a place for him in most projects. But sometimes it just takes having the right person see your work at the right time, as he was finally approached by Steven Spielberg himself thanks to a Netflix comedy special.

There was never a character of Filipino descent, so even going out for characters, it was very slim pickings because they didn’t know where to put me,” Koy lamented. “I was just like, ‘Well, put me in anything. Why does it have to be Asian-specific? I can play a cop. There are such things as cops that are Asian. Why is it that I can’t play that?’ It was this thing where there’s this cheesy excuse of, ‘Well, we don’t know where to use you.’ You can use me in anything. Thank God for Steven Spielberg because he watched my Netflix special called Coming In Hot and was literally like, ‘I want to make a movie with you.’ That’s how this all went down.”

Easter Sunday will be released on Blu-ray and DVD on Oct. 18, 2022. You can view the full trailer for the movie below.
