Captain America 3’s Original Script Was Rejected by Kevin Feige

Captain America: Civil War was undoubtedly one of the highlights of the MCU’s Phase Three. It expanded Marvel beyond its core lineup of characters by introducing Black Panther and Spider-Man.

The plot pits the characters against each other, with Captain America (Chris Evans) believing that superheroes should be free to defend humanity without interference from the government. Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) is adamantly opposed to this and urges for oversight As the discussion heats up, Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) and Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) must choose a side.

As reported by The Direct, in an interview with The Town podcast, Nate Moore, the producer of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, revealed that the initial plan for Captain America 3 was almost completely different from Civil War. The film would have been built around Baron Zemo and “the Madbomb,” a device that causes normal people to start fighting each other.

He added that “[Feige] was like, ‘That’s not a big enough idea, guys.’ And we’re like, ‘Let us write a draft, we’ll prove it to you.’ [Feige:] ‘Okay, prove it to me.’ As we’re getting done with it… he pulls me into his office and he said, ‘You know, I think we should try to do Civil War.’ And I was like, ‘Kevin, we don’t have half the stuff that’s in Civil War. We don’t have the New Warriors, we don’t have… Here’s all the reasons why we can’t do it.’ And he’s like, ‘Go home, read it, let’s talk about it.’.”

The Russo Brothers, who directed the third Captain America movie, went into greater depth about the potential alternate script in an earlier interview with Entertainment Weekly. Joe Russo asserts that the “moral conundrums” surrounding Cap having to “fight civilians” would have been a major focus of the narrative.
