Pennyworth Promises a ‘More Bonkers’ Fourth Season if the Series Gets Renewed

Bringing Bruce Wayne into the story is also a possibility for a potential fourth season of Pennyworth.

After the third season finale of Pennyworth: The Origins of Batman’s Butler, the future of the HBO Max series remains unclear, but if season 4 ends up happening, fans should expect to see the show push the envelope more than ever before. Originally premiering on Epix in 2019, the series has since made the move over to HBO Max, where it debuted its third season in October. Season 3 concluded last month in a way that leaves the door open for season 4, but as of now, HBO Max hasn’t officially given Pennyworth a renewal.

Season 3 of Pennyworth saw the introduction of Samantha Thomas Wayne (Jayda Eyles), the older sister of the future Dark Knight. However, Bruce Wayne himself has yet to make an appearance. In a new interview with ComicBook.com, showrunner Bruno Heller was asked about the possibility of Bruce popping up in a potential fourth season. He was also asked about whether Samantha herself becoming a vigilante would be considered, similar to Bruce’s transition to Batman. Heller confirms that both ideas are on the table, but regardless, fans can expect to see the show become more “bonkers” than ever if they come back for season 4.

“Both of those things are in the mix as a possibility when you’re creating this kind of storyline, which ends with facts that people already know. You kind of have to keep your options open and always be surprising. Always find a way to get your story to where it’s supposed to go, but in ways that people weren’t expecting and developments that no one saw coming. And I think that’s what we promised for this season. I think we delivered on that, and we will continue to deliver in the same way. Just wait and see.”

Pennyworth Will Get Crazier if Season 4 Happens

Warner Bros.

While Pennyworth is grounded in reality without the types of colorful superheroes that Batman will go on to face, it’s acknowledged that this prequel show is still a story leading up to those events. Linking Pennyworth to the Batman world inhabited by supervillains like the Joker will mean that the show can only get more “bonkers’ moving forward, as Heller explains.

“It would have to be slightly more bonkers. We’ve got to keep up that arc. It’s leading to a world in which people like Batman and the Joker exist so it was always the intention to kind of keep upping the ante on the craziness of this world as long as it keeps a grounding in real life, which is where Jack Bannon and Alfred come in, because he’s such a regular person The world will get stranger and crazier as it goes on.”

Created by Heller and Danny Cannon, Pennyworth serves as a Batman prequel by delving into the originals of Alfred Pennyworth, the man who goes on to serve as the Wayne family butler and later assists Bruce Wayne with his crime-fighting exploits as Batman. Jack Bannon stars as Alfred Pennyworth.
