Willow Showrunner Says He Has “Begged” Lucasfilm President For Second Season

Despite Willow being negatively reviewed by audiences, Jonathan Kasdan is still hoping to be able to continue Willow’s story for another season.

Disney+

Willow arrived on Disney+ with an unusual reception, pleasing critics much more than the original 1988 movie but being torn down by audiences. The sequel series has debuted three episodes so far, which has been a reasonable success on Disney+. However, it has not managed to win over many fans, and the series currently has a 24% score on Rotten Tomatoes. However, that hasn’t stopped discussions about a second season. Showrunner Jonathan Kasdan recently revealed that he has already been begging Lucasfilm’s Kathleen Kennedy to allow him to continue Willow’s journey.

The series of Willow throws audiences back into the dark fantasy world of Warwick Davis’ titular hero. This means swords, sorcery, an epic quest, and just a little bit of jeopardy and intrigue. While critics have jumped on board the Willow bandwagon, giving the series an 84% approval rating as opposed to the 53% the original movie holds, the question is whether audiences will stick with the show enough to gain a second season. However, Kasdan has plenty of ideas and wants the chance to bring them to life. He told Comicbook.com:

MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY

“We’re certainly working at it and I’m begging Kathy [Kennedy] because working with these actors and this crew of filmmakers on this show has been the best experience. We still feel like there are a lot of stories and bigger places to visit.”

When it comes to legacy sequels, whether it is in the form of a movie or TV series, there is an expectation of certain characters once again being featured in the story in some way. While Joanne Whalley joins Warwick Davis in the series, one person notably missing from the opening episodes is Val Kilmer’s Madmartigan. While Kilmer’s health issues have been a massive hurdle for the actor in recent years, it seems that Madmartigan was at one point considered to make an appearance in the show. Kasdan previously revealed:

“I approached Val the moment there was any momentum around this. I told him instantly that I wanted him to be a part of the story. He really wanted to be, and he was determined to be. And like a lot of things that happened, COVID made him flying to Wales in that moment very hard. It seemed too sad to all of us, and frankly not right for the story we were telling, that Madmartigan was dead, and as a result, he is not in this world. He comes back by the end of the season in as meaningful a way as we felt we could, while leaving the door open to continue to build it out.”

The series of Willow is said to have the spirit of Madmartigan through it, and Kasdan has even speculated about being able to include the character again in future seasons of Willow if he can. While all of this is yet to be seen, those enjoying Willow will be pleased to know that there are still five episodes to go and plenty of adventure coming over the next several weeks on Disney+.
