Evil Dead Rise Unveils New Blood Soaked Image

One of the stapes of the Evil Dead franchise, the boomstick, has been revealed.

Warner Bros. Pictures

A new Evil Dead Rise image has been released, depicting star Lily Sullivan covered in blood and holding a “boomstick,” as fans of the franchise are more likely to call shotguns. The actress looks very similar to how one Ash Williams (Bruce Campbell) looked towards the very end of The Evil Dead (1981). While a plot summary has been available for a while now, the released film images have seemingly filled in a few more blanks:

“When road-weary Beth pays an overdue visit to her older sister Ellie, who is raising three kids on her own in a cramped L.A. apartment, the sisters’ reunion is cut short by the discovery of a mysterious book deep in the bowels of Ellie’s building. The book’s contents, spoken aloud, give rise to flesh-possessing demons, and Beth finds herself thrust into a primal battle for survival as she is faced with the most nightmarish version of motherhood imaginable.”

The first Evil Dead Rise image released was of Ellie, played by Alyssa Sutherland, in full Deadite mode. The second image released was of Beth, played by Sullivan, and Ellie’s kids looking concerned at Ellie, who looks like she’s in the early stages of possession. Or at least her eyes do. It seems as though Ellie will take on a role similar to Cheryl (Ellen Sandweiss) in the original. Of course, looks can be deceiving.

MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY

In Evil Dead (2013), Mia (Jane Levy) is set up as the new Cheryl, while her brother David (Shiloh Fernandez) is set up to be the new Ash. (Spoiler Warning) Except at the end of the movie, David dies while Mia is exorcised and becomes the final girl. Complete with a hand-replacing chainsaw and snappy one-liner. (Spoiler Warning) In that regard, Evil Dead Rise could also contain a plot twist or two.

There Will Be Blood

Warner Bros. Pictures

In an interview with Empire, who was the first to release the new image of Beth, writer/director Lee Cronin said that his installment is “undoubtedly an Evil Dead movie, but it takes the lore and pulls it in a new direction.” He also took the time to further hype up how violent the film is supposed to be.

“It straps you onto a rocket that’s fueled by blood. You can either get off or you stay on ’til it explodes.”

According to Cronin, an industrial kitchen was needed in order to create the amount of blood they needed. Some of it, approximately 6,500 liters, he ended up spilling. Some of the fake blood even made its way back to the director’s house. To the point that when checking out, Cronin felt the need to warn his landlord about the situation.

“‘You’re going to find bloody handprints all over the apartment – but they’re not real, honest!’”

While the Evil Dead films have always been violent, they have varied wildly in tone. In Evil Dead II, Army of Darkness, and Ash vs Evil Dead, the violence is taken to a level that’s so extreme it becomes comical. The violence in The Evil Dead and Evil Dead, on the other hand, was extreme in a way that was meant to horrify the audience. By all accounts, Evil Dead Rise will be in the vein of the latter.
