  • That ’90s Show Trailer Has Some Fans Asking: ‘Where’s Hyde?’

Some fans are just finding out about Danny Masterson’s legal troubles which has kept him out of That ’90s Show.

Netflix

Most of the old gang is back in the official trailer for That ’90s Show, a continuation of That ’70s Show. Coming to Netflix in January, the series stars Kurtwood Smith and Debra Jo Rupp reprising their roles as Red and Kitty Forman, but there are also special appearances from most of the main cast members of the original series. That includes Ashton Kutcher as Kelso, Mila Kunis as Jackie, Topher Grace as Eric, Laura Prepon as Donna, and Wilmer Valderrama as Fez.

Noticeably absent is Danny Masterson, who played the fan favorite character Steven Hyde in That ’70s Show. His exclusion comes as no big surprise for those familiar with Masterson’s recent legal troubles, given the seriousness of the accusations against him. When That ’90s Show was in production, Masterson was scheduled to go on trial for multiple counts of rape that allegedly occurred in 2001 and 2003. The jury deadlocked after deliberations, resulting in a mistrial. Masterson is set to undergo a new trial in March.

Some fans who watched the recently released trailer for That ’90s Show noticed that Hyde wasn’t included and expressed their disappointment on social media. There are some who hadn’t caught any of the coverage of Masterson’s trial, and in order to find out why Hyde isn’t in That ’90s Show, they turned to Google to learn about them for the first time. In those cases, it made the exclusion more understandable for fans.

“I was about to say ‘Where’s Hyde?’, but a quick Google search answered my question,” one fan tweeted.

“But where’s Hyde? Oh, right…” someone else realizes.

Meanwhile, there are others who say Masterson shouldn’t have been left out as he hadn’t yet been convicted of a crime. Even some of the people who are just now finding out about the allegations are arguing that the actor should be considered innocent until proven guilty.

“Where is Hyde!?! Stop treating the guy like he’s a criminal and let him live his life until you know they actually find him guilty of something,” as one person puts it.

“Where’s my guy Hyde? He was the best one on the show!” writes one fan, who stood by this stance after learning about the trial. “So, not charged yet? Ever hear the saying innocent until proven guilty?”

The Hyde fan further theorized, “I honestly think they did ask him to come back to the show and he politely declined because he saw the trailer. If I’m Hyde, I’m not ruining my legacy by coming back to a lame reboot.”

Many Other Familiar Faces Will Return

Along with the main cast members of the original show (excluding Masterson), there are some other familiar characters that are back for That ’90s Show. Don Stark recently confirmed that he’d be back as Bob and images of him in the role were released ahead of the new trailer. Tommy Chong also previously confirmed that he’d be back as Leo, though as that character spent a lot of time with Hyde, that may serve as another reminder of Masterson’s absence.

In any case, you can check out That ’90s Show when the series premieres on Netflix on Jan. 19, 2023. You can see the new trailer along with some of the fan responses below.
