Danny Trejo Reflects on From Dusk till Dawn: ‘I Stole the Movie!’

Danny Trejo looks back at From Dusk till Dawn and working with George Clooney on the vampire film.

Danny Trejo remains fond of his role in 1996’s From Dusk till Dawn. Directed by Robert Rodriguez and scripted by Quentin Tarantino, From Dusk till Dawn tells the story of criminal brothers (George Clooney and Tarantino) who head to Mexico with hostages in tow to avoid the law in the U.S., only to wind up trapped in a saloon that’s overrun with bloodthirsty vampires. The film was a hit at the box office and would spawn a franchise that includes multiple sequels.

In the movie, Trejo plays Razor Charlie, a vampire who moonlights as the saloon’s bartender. He meets his end when he is staked by Tom Savini’s character Sex Machine. But despite his limited screen time, Trejo really stands out in the film, and that fact isn’t lost on the actor himself. In a new interview with GQ reflecting on his most popular roles, Trejo reflected on From Dusk till Dawn and had this to say about the film.

MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY

“From Dusk till Dawn, I stole the movie, man! The movie was so real. It’s like, you couldn’t help it being real. And then George Clooney was unbelievable. That was his first movie. God, man, 5-6 years later, he did a film called Up in the Air, and I just went to the premiere, and he starts screaming, you know, ‘Trejo! Hey, come here!’ And he starts, he starts giving him my report. ‘Hey, he was in my first movie, brother!’ And I was like, ‘Wow, this is George Clooney.'”

Danny Trejo Appeared in All Three From Dusk till Dawn Movies

Perhaps Trejo is on to something, as he is the only actor to have appeared in all three installments of the From Dusk till Dawn trilogy. After appearing in the original film, he returned in 1999’s From Dusk till Dawn 2: Texas Blood Money along with the 2000 prequel From Dusk till Dawn 3: The Hangman’s Daughter. If that wasn’t enough, Trejo also played a main role in the second season of From Dusk till Dawn: The Series, though that was with a different continuity with the actor taking on a different role.

“I think I’m the king of independent movies, and I love it! I like doing them,” Trejo recently said of why he loves doing indie films so much. “I did a movie with Harrison Ford, called Six Days, Seven Nights, in Hawaii. It was like three months in Hawaii. I probably worked 15 or 16 days out of it. I get bored. On really high-budget movies, sometimes you’re just sitting in your trailer. I can’t stand being in trailers: It reminds me of a prison cell.”

From Dusk till Dawn is currently streaming on HBO Max.
