  • Smallville Creators Reveal What They’d Do Differently

Miles Millar and Al Gough, who have since created the hit Netflix show Wednesday, are looking back at their Smallville mistakes.

It’s always easy to look back and reconsider things we now may have done differently. Just ask Alfred Gough and Miles Millar, the creators of Wednesday who are currently enjoying a new wave of success after the Addams Family reboot’s arrival on Netflix. The series comes two decades after the pair previously reimagined Superman with Smallville, a prequel series following Tom Welling as a young Clark Kent in the years before he suits up as the Man of Steel.

In a new interview with THR, Gough and Millar opened up on how they’d approach Smallville differently in retrospect. For Gough, he mentions the relationship between Clark and Lana Lang (Kristin Kreuk) going on too long, making it feel “repetitive” after a certain point. He has especially realized this after getting some feedback from his daughter who’s recently been watching the show.

“The Clark-Lana thing played out way too long. Something else had to happen there. I think that was one that got a little repetitive. My younger daughter is now, finally after Wednesday, she’s going back to watch Smallville, and she’s in season two. She goes, ‘What’s the deal with these two?’ I’m like, ‘It was a different time.’ So, I think there are things there, if we went back, we probably would be a little more adventurous with some of those relationships and bring them to certain heads and let them play out.”

Millar agrees, though he offers the explanation that the show played out as it did at the time because they had no idea it’d go on for ten seasons. He also suggests that the female characters would be handled differently if the show were getting written today.

“We were definitely cautious and just very conscious of the fact we wanted to get to five seasons, and we ended up at 10 seasons, but we’re just like, ‘OK, if we split them apart, what are we gonna do?’ Again, as the father of girls, I think the female characters we would do differently today. I think Lana, her agency was not there. She could have been a much stronger character, and she always felt put in positions of weakness. It’s a different era, a different time. So, that’s something I think we could have done and would definitely look at to do better.”

Smallville Still Has a Strong Fan Base

Warner Bros.

Smallville is still a hit, having since had its story continue with a comic book series. Tom Welling and Erica Durance have also reprised their roles for The CW’s Crisis on Infinite Earths crossover event. In recent years, there has also been a lot of chatter about an animated series continuation getting put into the works, spearheaded by Welling and co-star Michael Rosenbaum. The series would pick up after the TV show with Welling’s Clark Kent now fighting crime as Superman.

If you want to watch Smallville, you can stream the series on HBO Max.
