Episode 101: Life and Death

Disney+

The first episode begins with the birth of Ahsoka Tano at the village. After a year has passed, Ahsoka’s mother, Pav-ti (Janina Gavankar), decides to take her hunting for the very first time. Exploring the forest, Pav-ti explains the way of life to Ahsoka just before they encounter a group of kybucks. Aiming her blaster at the ready, Pav-ti fires and successfully takes down one of the kybucks. Pav-ti begins to chant a prayer in Togruti as she pulls out her knife and officially claims her kill.

While Pav-ti is securing the dead kybuck so that she can bring it to her village, a large saber-toothed tiger-like creature approaches from behind. Firing several shots to protect herself and young Ahsoka from the deadly creature, Nak-il (Sunil Malhotra), Ahsoka’s father, hears the blaster shots being fired from a distance. Nak-il along with several other villagers, rush into the forest to search for Pav-ti. Nak-il and the rest of the villagers arrive too late as Ahsoka has already been taken by the creature deeper into the forest.

Before being eaten by the creature, baby Ahsoka touches the creature’s nose as it reacts to the presence of the force. Back at the village, everyone has regrouped and armed themselves with weapons preparing to hunt the creature and search for Ahsoka. Just before they venture off into the forest, the creature arrives with Ahsoka riding on its back. The creature returns Ahsoka to her mother as Gantika (Toks Olagundoye) takes a deeper look at Ahsoka revealing that she is a Jedi.

Episode 102: Justice

The second episode starts off with a much younger Dooku (Corey Burton) and his padawan, Qui-Gon Jinn (Micheal Richardson), arriving at a dark and impoverished village. As they are walking deeper into the village, the people refuse to acknowledge the arrival of the two Jedi as some go into hiding. Entering a local bar, Dooku speaks to a village elder (Vanessa Marshall) and reveals that they are looking for Senator Dagonet’s son who has apparently been kidnaped. Openly admitting that the people in the village purposely kidnaped the senator’s son, they take both Dooku and Qui-Gon to a nearby barn where the son is held captive. The people of the village explain to the Jedi that the senator is corrupt and is the sole reason why they are living in their poor and terrible conditions.

Before they are able to discuss this any further, Senator Dagonet (Mark Rolston) himself arrives outside the barn with a large group of soldiers. During a standoff, Dooku discovers that the senator is truly corrupted and refuses to return his son to him. A battle begins as the soldiers attack the Jedi and the villagers. As more people are being hurt or killed, the angry Dooku decides to force choke the senator.

Aware that this is not the Jedi way, Qui-Gon manages to calm Dooku down as he releases the senator from his choke hold. As the battle comes to an end, the senator’s son (Josh Keaton) reunites with his father. The young boy reveals that he will do what he must to make things right for everyone in the village. Hoping that things will change for the better in the village, Dooku and Qui-Gon set out to their ship for departure.

Episode 103: Choices

Disney+

The following episode reveals another backstory of a now middle-aged Dooku on ship with Mace Windu (TC Carson). It is revealed that they are heading to Raxus Secundus to retrieve Master Katri’s body who has previously passed away. Once they arrive on the planet, Dooku and Windu are taken to speak with Senator Larik (Theo Rossi). While blaming himself for the death of Master Katri, Dooku and Windu sense that Senator Larik’s explanation seems suspicious.

After speaking with the senator, Dooku requests for the senator and his guards to show them the location of where Master Katri was killed. They arrive near a forest just outside the city where Dooku and Windu immediately begin to investigate the area. Realizing what has truly happened to Master Katri, the guards kill Senator Larik then attempt to takedown Dooku and Windu. After a brief battle, one of the surviving guards reveals the truth involving the death of Master Katri as they are taken to holding cells.

After finding out everything that has happened on Raxus, Dooku and Windu finally retrieve Master Katri’s body. They take her body to the Jedi Temple where she is given a proper burial. Once the funeral has ended, Mace Windu is offered a seat at the Jedi Council. However, Dooku seemingly seems upset that he was not given the same offer.

Two Paths and Two Choices

Disney+

Tales of the Jedi explores the most crucial events of Ahsoka Tano across various points of her life as well as exploring a younger Count Dooku before his fall to the dark side. The series uses the same animation style as The Clone Wars while the soundtrack is top-notch. All six episodes are roughly 10-15 minutes long which is the perfect amount of runtime to tell these backstories. Tales of the Jedi is definitely a unique Star Wars series that will hopefully get a second season sometime in the near future.

All six episodes of Star Wars: Tales of the Jedi will debut on Disney+ on October 26th.
