  • Better Call Saul Wins Big at Critics’ Choice Awards

After coming up short at the Golden Globes, Better Call Saul had a great night at the Critics’ Choice Awards.

AMC

Better Call Saul had a fantastic night at the Critics’ Choice Awards. On Sunday night, the 28th Critics’ Choice Television Awards were held, and Better Call Saul had quite the presence with five total nominations. That made it the second most nominated show of the night behind only Abbott Elementary, which had six. It wasn’t a total sweep, but Better Call Saul did pick up the coveted win for Best Drama Series. It was up against Disney+’s Andor, Apple TV+’s Bad Sisters, Netflix’s The Crown, HBO’s Euphoria, Paramount+’s The Good Fight, HBO’s House of the Dragon, Apple TV+’s Severance, and Paramount Network’s Yellowstone.

For his role as Gus Fring, Giancarlo Esposito also got the win for Best Supporting Actor in a Drama Series. He beat out Andre Braugher for The Good Fight, Ismael Cruz Cordova for THe Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, Michael Emerson for Evil, Jon Lithgow for The Old Man, and Matt Smith for House of the Dragon.

Series lead Bob Odenkirk, who previously won the award in 2015, again won for Best Actor in a Drama Series. He beat Jeff Bridges for The Old Man, Sterling K. Brown for This Is Us, Diego Luna for Andor, Adam Scott for Severance, and Antony Starr for The Boys.

Meanwhile, two of the show’s stars were up for Best Supporting Actress in a Drama Series. Carol Burnett was nominated for her role as Marion while Rhea Seehorn was up once again for playing fan favorite Kim Wexler. Jennifer Coolidge got the win in that category for The White Lotus with the other nominees including Milly Alcock for House of the Dragon and Julia Garner for Ozark.

Better Call Saul has garnered wins at the Critics’ Choice Television Awards in the past. That goes back to 2015 when Odenkirk won for Best Actor in a Drama Series with Jonathan Banks (Mike Ehrmantraut) taking the win for Best Supporting Actor. The tie-in video Employee Training: Legal Ethics with Kim Wexler also won in 2021 for Best Short Form Series. Better Call Saul has been nominated for Best Drama Series many times as well with additional acting nominations also given to Odenkirk, Banks, Seehorn, and Michael McKean (Chuck McGill).

Better Call Saul Is Hit or Miss With Awards Shows

Sony Pictures Television

Better Call Saul can go either way at awards shows. It has long had a presence at the Primetime Emmy Awards, where it has garnered 46 total nominations over the years. However, at that event, the series has yet to pick up a single win. It was recently up again for more awards at the Golden Globes, bringing its total nomination count up to six. After another winless night, the series also remains without a Golden Globe trophy as well.

But there are other awards shows where Better Call Saul picks up wins. It cleaned up at the Saturn Awards last year. The show has also picked up notable wins at other awards shows including the American Film Institute Awards, the Hollywood Critics Association TV Awards, and the Peabody Awards, among others. It was also recently given the Golden Tomato Award as the best-reviewed drama series of 2022.
