Lucky Hank Teaser Puts Bob Odenkirk Through the Wringer

Bob Odenkirk doesn’t seem quite so lucky after all in the latest teaser for Lucky Hank.

AMC

A new teaser trailer has been released for Lucky Hank. The next series to star Bob Odenkirk after the actor’s acclaimed run on the Breaking Bad prequel series Better Call Saul, Lucky Hank is also an AMC show. In his new show, Odenkirk plays William Henry “Hank” Devereaux Jr., a man who is clearly not quite as lucky as the series title might suggest. You can see what we mean by that by watching the new teaser below after it was first unveiled by Entertainment Weekly.

“I’ve always been a difficult man,” Odenkirk’s Hank says in the teaser, adding, “a fact easily confirmed by the unlucky people around me.”

The 30-second spot also includes some different moments of Hank dealing with rejection and other hardships, suggesting that the title of the series is meant to be ironic. Hank seems to be someone who can’t escape from trouble one way or another, whether it’s coming to him or he’s bringing it to others. The character is clearly a lot different from who Odenkirk played in Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul, but he’s also someone struggling with his own problems that we’ll see explored as the series plays out.

“He’s a cranky guy, but you like him,” Odenkirk told EW about his new character. “[It’s like] you took a very fun show — like a Parks and Rec — and you said, ‘Let’s slow down and get to know these people and have their internal battles be a little bit more of the subject matter.’ It’s really a great mashup of comedy and the kind of drama that we’ve gotten to do on Better Call Saul and it’s become more prevalent in streaming shows, and I think it’ll be neat.”

Bob Odenkirk Stars in Lucky Hank

AMC

Lucky Hank is based on the novel Straight Man by Richard Russo. When the series was first announced, it was intended to be called Straight Man as well before AMC recently gave the show a name change. Aaron Zelman and Paul Lieberstein serve as showrunners on the series, while Odenkirk is also on board as an executive producer. The show also stars Mireille Enos, Olivia Scott Welch, Diedrich Bader, Sara Amini, Cedric Yarbrough, and Suzanne Cryer.

The official series description reads:

“Starring Emmy-nominated Bob Odenkirk (Better Call Saul), Lucky Hank is an eight-episode mid-life crisis tale about the unlikely chairman of the English department in a badly underfunded college in the Pennsylvania rust belt.”

Lucky Hank premieres on March 19, 2023, on AMC. The show will also be made available to stream on AMC+.
