• Avenue 5 Officially Canceled at HBO After Two Seasons

Season 3 of Avenue 5 isn’t happening, HBO has confirmed.

HBO has pulled the plug on Avenue 5. Deadline reports that the space comedy series has been officially canceled after two seasons, though the news does not come as a big surprise. There had previously been reports that the show was in serious jeopardy due to the pandemic heavily affecting its production. Once Hugh Laurie signed on to star in the Apple TV+ series Tehran, it seemed to spell the end of Avenue 5, though it hasn’t been until now that this has been confirmed by HBO.

“Going to space with Armando Iannucci has been an incredible journey,” says an HBO statement. “While we will not be moving forward with a third season of Avenue 5, we look forward to many more adventures together.”

The show getting canceled was not due to the show not performing well with viewers, but rather because of its challenging production. First premiering right at the start of the pandemic in January 2020, the series was a hit for HBO, prompting the network to renew Avenue 5 for season 2. It wasn’t long after that when the pandemic took a heavy toll on various movie and TV show productions, getting many canceled and others delayed indefinitely. Season 2 of Avenue 5 was delayed until late 2021, and it wasn’t until October 2022 when the second season finally premiered on HBO. That’s almost a full three years after season 1, and because of the delays, cast options had lapsed, and everyone has been moving on to other projects.

Avenue 5 Is Now Over

Avenue 5 was created by Armando Iannucci. The series is set decades into the future, following Hugh Laurie as the captain of an intergalactic cruise ship with Josh Gad co-starring as the owner. Its story picks up with the Avenue 5 ship veering far off course in space, facing a three-year journey back home with very little supplies, creating many challenges for their survival.

Along with Laurie and Gad, the series stars Zach Woods (The Office), Rebecca Front (Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard), Suzy Nakamura (Dr. Ken), Lenora Crichlow (Black Mirror), Nikki Amuka-Bird (Knock at the Cabin), and Ethan Phillips (Star Trek: Voyager). Iannucci executive produced the show alongside Kevin Loader, Will Smith, Tony Roche, and Simon Blackwell. Peter Fellows co-executive produced with Becky Martin while Steve Clark-Hall produced.

While there won’t be a third season to look forward to, you can stream the first two seasons of Avenue 5 on HBO Max.
