Eagles’ Sirianni: Super Bowl loss makes me ‘hungrier to get back’

The Philadelphia Eagles fell short of winning the Super Bowl, but the journey there has only pushed head coach Nick Sirianni even harder to get his hands on a Lombardi Trophy.

“We were there. We were close,” Sirianni said Thursday, according to Ralph Vacchiano of Fox Sports. “All that does is make me hungrier to get back. … (I’m) more determined, driven to make that climb again, to make it to the top.”

The Eagles finished atop the NFC with a 14-3 record before being stopped by the Kansas City Chiefs 38-35 in Super Bowl LVII. However, Philadelphia is scheduled to have multiple starters become free agents and lost both their offensive and defensive coordinators to head coaching jobs.

Sirianni added that the replacement for former offensive coordinator Shane Steichen, who became the Indianapolis Colts’ head coach, will continue to call plays, according to NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo. He said this will allow him to manage the game better.

As for the future of the defensive coordinator post, Sirianni told reporters he’s “not opposed” to changing defensive schemes after Jonathan Gannon took the Arizona Cardinals’ head coaching job, per Jeff McLane of The Inquirer.

The Eagles’ defense ranked eighth in scoring and second in yardage allowed in 2022. However, the franchise allowed 340 yards in the loss to the Chiefs.

As for Jalen Hurts, who was the frontman in the Eagles’ Super Bowl run, he’s expected to be a priority for a long-term extension this offseason.

“We definitely want to keep one of our best players here,” general manager Howie Roseman said.
