Indiana Jones and The Dial of Destiny Is the Longest Movie of The Franchise

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny has been confirmed by Disney as the end of the Indiana Jones franchise, and now Kathleen Kennedy has also revealed that it will be the longest adventure in the series that began all the back in 1981 with Raiders of the Lost Ark.

Kennedy appeared at Star Wars Celebration in London, but she wasn’t just giving away details on the upcoming slate of Star Wars projects coming from Lucasfilm. While speaking to Collider, the company president was asked about the final installment of the Indiana Jones Saga, which is due to hit theaters in June. During a short interview, she said the runtime of Harrison Ford’s last time out as the intrepid, if now long-in-the-tooth adventurer, will be around 142 minutes long. This sets it as the longest movie in the franchise, 15 minutes ahead of 1989’s Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.

The movies of the Indiana Jones Saga have always pushed around the two-hour mark, and with Dial of Destiny seeming to have a lot to pack in, it is probably not surprising to see the runtime ticking up a little more than the others. There is a massive legacy for Harrison Ford’s character to bring to a close, which is not something anyone wants to see rushed. Many fans hope that the longer movie doesn’t simply lead to some unnecessary filler and that every minute is spent giving Indy the send-off he deserves.

While there has been a long gap between some of the Indiana Jones movies, with Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull and Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny having much lengthier gaps than the eight years that the original trilogy was released within. However, despite his advancing years, Harrison Ford previously explained that he wanted to come back this time because he wanted to end the franchise. He said:

“I always wanted to do it. I wanted to do the rest of the story to see the end of his career. It’s the last time for me.”

There have been plenty of hints as to what will happen in Indy’s final outing, with Jones being accompanied by his goddaughter on an adventure to stop the franchise’s ever-present Nazis gaining control of a powerful and possibly supernatural artifact, in this instance, the Dial of Destiny. There has been no secret made that Harrison Ford was de-aged for part of the movie, but there is still no exact confirmation of whether this will purely be for flashback sequences or something more substantial. Since the arrival of the new trailer, some fans have even theorized that the old Indy will meet his younger self in a bout of time travel.

All will eventually be revealed when Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny arrives in cinemas on June 30, bringing the franchise to a conclusion more than 40 years after the story began.
