James Gunn Wants Chris Pratt to Play a Beloved DC Hero in Superman: Legacy

James Gunn and his team of misfits are saying goodbye to Marvel Studios in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. The director will leave Disney and go straight into the competition’s field, as co-CEO of DC Studios and the main man behind the new DCU, which includes the new Man of Steel movie, Superman: Legacy.

And while characters from the MCU’s galactic franchise may still reappear in some other projects, most actors like Dave Bautista and Zoe Saldana have made it clear that they aren’t too keen on continuing their roles. But that doesn’t mean they can’t follow their friend and director on new adventures.

In fact, some of them have stated that they would be delighted to play a role in DC. Gunn has even confirmed that one or more of the stars of Guardians of the Galaxy will be in Superman: Legacy, without revealing which role they would play.

The statements have fans creating theories about which character would suit which one best, with Saldana being an option for Lois Lane, Chukwudi Iwuji for Lex Luthor, and even Will Poulter or Chris Pratt for Clark Kent himself. However, it seems that Gunn has other plans for the actor behind Star-Lord.

In an interview with The Toronto Sun, the director revealed that he knows exactly what character he wants Pratt to play in Superman: Legacy, and it’s completely unexpected:

“I was hoping I could cast you as Krypto the Superdog [in Superman: Legacy]. You could do motion capture on set and walk around on your hands and knees, but you can’t talk.”

The most interesting thing, however, was Pratt’s response, who was quick to reveal that Gunn’s words contained important news regarding the next DC movie:

“It sounds like there’s going to be a character called Krypto in Superman—breaking news.”

Could Krypto Play an Important Role in Superman: Legacy?

Cartoon Network

Created in 1955 by writer Otto Binder and artist Curt Swan, Krypto made his first appearance in Adventure Comics #210 within the Superboy stories. Thanks to his popularity, he won over fans and has since been involved in hundreds of story arcs, eventually becoming Superman’s pet. The last time he had an important role was in DC League of Super-Pets, a movie in which Dwayne Johnson voiced the character.

His relationship with the mythical hero is undoubtedly one of the most humanizing characteristics of the Last Son of Krypton, so the dog’s participation in Superman: Legacy could help build a less dark version of the hero than we’ve seen recently. .

In fact, the description of the film indicates that it will be a story that will find Clark trying to deal with his two realities, being the hero of Metropolis and just a farm boy from Smallville, Kansas. So having an ally like Krypto on his adventures would be ideal for this version of the character.

Gunn has also confirmed that Jimmy Olsen, another beloved character within Superman’s mythology will be part of the film, so Clark will have some good friends by his side while he tries to find his place in the world.
