Scarlett Johansson Felt Hopeless After Losing Her Dream Role to Sandra Bullock

Scarlett Johansson is one of the few Hollywood stars that has managed to build an enviable career, participating in all kinds of films in which she was able to demonstrate her acting skills. However, there was a time when she felt hopeless after losing a role she really wanted to none other than Santa Bullock.

Through Variety, the actress revealed that a few years ago, she went through a dark moment in her career, believing that she had stagnated and seeing herself frustrated by the few possibilities of growing and getting really relevant roles, after losing the opportunity to star in Alfonso Cuarón’s Gravity with George Clooney:

“I got turned down for two roles — the first was ‘Iron Man 2’ and then the other one was Alfonso Cuarón’s ‘Gravity.’ I had wanted that role so much. It was sort of the straw that broke the camel’s back. I felt really frustrated and hopeless. Like, ‘Am I doing the right job?’ The work I was being offered felt deeply unfulfilling. I think I was offered every Marilyn Monroe script ever. I was like, ‘Is this the end of the road creatively?’.”

Gravity was a huge success, not just at the box office, but also during awards season where it won several Academy Awards, including Best Director for Cuarón. So it is understandable that Johansson has felt that great frustration after not being chosen for the project.

Fortunately, in the end she was chosen to play Natasha Romanoff in Iron Man 2, which would start a long journey within the MCU as the popular heroine, who in 2021 was finally able to have her own movie in the form of a prequel after the death of the character in Avengers: Endgame.

Scarlett Johansson And Her Battle With Disney Over Black Widow’s Release

Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures

In the midst of the pandemic, Disney decided that bringing Black Widow solely to theaters was too big of a risk. For this reason, taking advantage of the recent launch of their streaming platform and just as they had done with Mulan, the House of Mouse also released the Marvel Studios spinoff on Disney+ with an additional cost.

The strategy resulted in a strong disagreement with Johansson, who was not only the protagonist of the film, but also one of the producers and a strong defender of the character.

Even today the actress still remembers that moment with sadness, although fortunately she had a good distraction after the conflict:

“I was sad and disappointed. But mostly sad. It was such a surreal moment because we were all isolated and just sort of emerging a little bit. I was also really heavily pregnant, too, which in a weird way was amazing timing. Suddenly, your entire attention is drawn to this miracle of life. So, I had the most wonderful distraction in the world and soon after had a beautiful baby.”

Later, Johansson went down in history after her battle with Disney, becoming one of the few female celebrities to reach a profitable agreement against a Hollywood studio.
