The Full Monty Sequel Series Trailer Brings The Sheffield Strippers to Disney+

It’s been quarter of a century since Robert Carlyle led a group of unlikely strippers to box office glory in The Full Monty, and now the original cast is back in a brand new series on Disney+. Over 25 years older, Carlyle is joined by Mark Addy, Tom Wilkinson, Hugo Speer, Lesley Sharp, Paul Barber, Steve Huison and Wim Snape on a new comical journey that will no doubt tug at the heartstrings as it catches up with the characters last seen baring all a generation ago. You can check out the first trailer for the series below.

While there is no sign of any stripping this time around, the legacy sequel is firmly placed in the same comedy-drama wheelhouse that made the original movie a massive success. According to the official series synopsis:

“The Full Monty follows the same band of brothers as they navigate the post-industrial city of Sheffield, and society’s crumbling healthcare, education, and employment sectors. The comedy-drama will uncover what happened to the gang after they put their kit back on, exploring their brighter, sillier and more desperate moments. It will also highlight how the fiercely funny world of these working-class heroes – still residing in Sheffield – has changed in the intervening decades.”

With legacy sequels, and particularly for Disney+ legacy sequels in the form of an eight-part series, being all the rage, the timing could be perfect for The Full Monty’s return. Hopefully the British cast will not have lost any of their magic, even if they appear to not be losing their clothes this time. The Full Monty will arrive on Disney+ on June 14.

Robert Carlyle Could Soon Be Seen in a Trainspotting Sequel

Back in 2021, Robert Carlyle revealed that he had been discussing the possibility of reprising his role as Begbie in a new sequel to another 90s hit Trainspotting. While the 1996 movie has already had a direct sequel in T2: Trainspotting, Carlyle was hoping to play his psychopathic character again in The Blade Artist, which would be based on author Irvine Welsh’s novel of the same name. At the time he said:

“Irvine [Welsh, author of Trainspotting] and myself have been chatting quite a lot recently with a couple of excellent producers in London about [continuing the Trainspotting story]. As you know there was another book called The Blade Artist which is just entirely about Begbie and his mad story. It’s still in its early moments but it’s looking pretty good that this will happen eventually.”

Carlyle went on to suggest that the story is one that would be perfectly suited to long-form TV storytelling, and that could mean we might see him turning up on TV in another legacy sequel. He said of the impossibility of putting the story in a movie:

“It’s such a massive story – it’s all Los Angeles back and forth to Edinburgh – and it’s difficult to do all that in an hour and a half! Especially if you want to keep the basis of that book pure.”
