Elle Fanning, like her equally talented sister Dakota, have been two huge Hollywood stars since a very young age. The current protagonist of The Great has managed to make her own name for many years now, starring in big blockbusters like Maleficent, more independent projects like The Neon Demon, and even on the small screen with series like The Girl from Plainville or the already mentioned Hulu’s hit.
However, despite the myriad of titles and awards she’s garnered throughout her career, and being recognized as one of the best young actresses in the industry, she may still have trouble landing some roles, especially if it’s in big franchises.

Speaking with Josh Horowitz on his Happy Sad Confused Podcast, Fanning confessed that she lost a role in something big a while back because of her social media numbers:
“I didn’t get a part once for something big – and it might not have just been this reason, but this was all the feedback that I heard – because I didn’t have enough Instagram followers at the time. And so, that was a little like, OK, I mean that I firmly don’t believe in like ever not getting a part [because of that].”
Beyond her role as Aurora in the Disney live-action starring Angelina Jolie, Elle has been mainly acting in movies not so close to big companies. In fact, the actress revealed that she wants to maintain a balance between high-budget films and more independent ones:
“If you want to do your indie work, especially in producing, now I realize, well, there are scripts that I want to take a chance on and produce and they’re small, but then you know, you have to know, maybe it’s about the experience. But then … if you have the backing of knowing that you have that thing [a studio], it does make you breathe better.”

What’s Elle Fanning Doing Now?
Hulu
For a long time now, Fanning has been working mostly in television. After being cast as Catherine in The Great joined by Nicholas Hoult, which is now streaming its third season on Hulu, she also starred in true crime drama The Girl from Plainville, and both roles have earned her a few awards and nominations.
In 2021, she was also part of an episode of adult animated series Robot Chicken, lending her voice to three different characters. Her last appearance on the big screen was in 2020’s The Roads Not Taken. That same year she released another movie, All the Bright Places, but it premiered on Netflix.
Elle Fanning started her career in one of her sister’s biggest projects, I Am Sam, playing the young version of Dakota’s character. Then she participated in some other big titles like Déjà Vu with Denzel Washington, and Babel with Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett. It was in 2014 when she had her big break after being chosen to play Aurora in Maleficent, but by that time she had made a large number of movies and TV shows.
