Johnny Depp to Take Part in Tim Burton Documentary Series

Edward Scissorhands star Johnny Depp will take part in a documentary about his frequent filmmaker collaborator, Tim Burton. As revealed by Deadline, the four-part docuseries will explore the decade-spanning career of Burton, featuring interviews with many of director’s favorites including Depp, Helena Bonham Carter, Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder, Danny Elfman (who will compose the theme for the documentary), Christopher Walken, Danny DeVito, Mia Wasikowska, Christoph Waltz, and Wednesday star Jenna Ortega.

Directed by Tara Wood (21 Years: Richard Linklater), the currently untitled Tim Burton Documentary will go to market at Cannes. The docuseries has been described as “an otherworldly, dream journey into the mind” that will explore the unique vision of Tim Burton, who has become known for his affinity for gothic fantasy and horror with the likes of Edward Scissorhands, Batman and its sequel Batman Returns, The Nightmare Before Christmas, Ed Wood, Sleepy Hollow, Corpse Bride, Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, and many more.

“Tim continues to build his aesthetic, the Burton-esque style, derived from a wealth of art, cinematic, and literary genres,” a logline for the series reads. “The documentary explores how Burton brings his vision to life through his own joyous idiosyncrasy and his ability to meld the ominous and the frightful with a sense of whimsy. Tim’s films are just the tip of the iceberg.”

Director Tara Wood released the following statement regarding the project saying, “In the making of this doc, Tim’s creative family, a gaggle of creative genius, met me with open hearts and enthusiasm to share their profound insights into Tim’s unique, magical world. And it has been a truly inspiring, joyous and life-changing experience. Whatever you do or where you come from, Tim’s story will inspire you.”

Johnny Depp Now Has Several Projects in the Pipeline

Universal Pictures

The docuseries is set to feature all manner of never-before-seen backstage footage along with interviews with Burton’s frequent collaborators. Burton and Depp have worked together several times over the years, beginning with Edward Scissorhands back in 1990, with their most recent effort being Dark Shadows in 2012.

“The most important filmmaker who changed my life completely is Tim,” Depp said in a statement regarding his relationship with Burton. “In the very beginning, he’s the guy that fought for me.”

Following the outcome of the much-publicized court case between himself and his ex-wife and actress Amber Heard, Johnny Depp now seems to be paving the way for a comeback. The Pirates of the Caribbean star has several projects in the pipeline and will make his return to the big screen in the upcoming biographical drama Jeanne du Barry, which is set to be the opening movie at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival.

Depp will also step behind the camera for his planned biopic of the artist Amedeo Modigliani, which now counts John Wick: Chapter 2 star Riccardo Scamarcio, Yves Saint Laurent actor Pierre Niney, and acting icon Al Pacino among its cast.

Tim Burton meanwhile will at last direct a sequel to his 1988 horror comedy hit, Beetlejuice. Starring Michael Keaton, Jenna Ortega, Monica Bellucci, and Willem Dafoe, the long-awaited follow-up will follow Ortega as the daughter of Lydia Deetz, Winona Ryder’s character from the original. Beetlejuice 2 has now been given a release date of September 6, 2024.
