Citadel Renewed for Second Season on Amazon Prime, Joe Russo Will Direct Every Episode

Amazon Prime Video’s deeply ambitious, globe-hopping spy series Citadel has now been renewed for a second season. And Avengers: Endgame and The Gray Man director Joe Russo is all set to helm every episode. Led by Game of Thrones and Eternals star Richard Madden and The Matrix Resurrections star and Bollywood icon Priyanka Chopra Jonas, Citadel was met with decidedly mixed reviews upon release but managed huge viewing figures, becoming Prime Video’s fourth most-watched original series worldwide.

“Citadel is a truly global phenomenon,” Jennifer Salke, head of Amazon and MGM Studios, said of bringing Citadel back for another mission. “Our goal was always to create a new franchise rooted in original IP that would grow Prime Video’s international audience. This show has drawn an outsize number of new international customers to Prime Video. Its massive worldwide debut audience is a testament to Joe and Anthony Russo’s remarkable vision, the incredible talents of Richard Madden, Priyanka Chopra Jonas, Lesley Manville and Stanley Tucci, and the tireless work of the creative teams, cast, and crew. Given the overwhelming number of our customers who have embraced this show, we are not only thrilled to share the premiere episode of Citadel globally without membership, but also confirm that the series will return for a second season.”

Aside from this second season renewal, the plan is for Citadel to spawn a global event franchise, with different characters leading their own adventures in different parts of the world before coming together much like Marvel’s The Avengers. Described as “an expansive and groundbreaking global event comprising a mothership series and several local language satellite series,” these Citadel spinoffs are already being planned in the Italian Alps, India, Spain and Mexico.

“AGBO is thrilled to embark on this next phase of the spyverse with Jen, Vernon, and the entire team at Amazon,” executive producers Anthony and Joe Russo said of the return. “The innovative storytelling of Citadel has paved the way for an incredible, worldwide collaboration with creatives in front of and behind the camera.”

Citadel Follows Two Spies Who Have Forgotten Who They Really Are

Prime Video

Released last month, the first season of Citadel introduces a complex world of spies, traitors, and wiped memories as it picks up eight years after the fall of the Citadel, the independent global spy agency tasked to uphold the safety and security of all people. Destroyed by a powerful syndicate known as Manticore that works from the shadows, the series follows elite agents Mason Kane (Madden) and Nadia Sinh (Jonas), who have had their memories wiped after narrowly escaping with their lives.

Of course, these things never stay forgotten forever, and while they have built new lives under new identities, unaware of their pasts, Mason is tracked down by his former Citadel colleague, Bernard Orlick (Stanley Tucci), who desperately needs his help to prevent Manticore from establishing a new world order. Thus, Mason seeks out his former partner, Nadia, and the two spies embark on a mission that takes them around the world in an effort to stop Manticore, all while contending with a relationship built on secrets, lies, and a dangerous-yet-undying love.

Created by Josh Appelbaum, Bryan Oh, and David Weil, the latter of whom will return as showrunner on Citadel season two, and starring Richard Madden, Priyanka Chopra Jonas, Stanley Tucci, Lesley Manville, Osy Ikhile, Ashleigh Cummings, Roland Møller, and Caoilinn Springall, the first season of Citadel is available to stream now on Prime Video.
