Across the Spider-Verse Finally Solves Morbius’ Controversial Vulture Plot Hole

Sometimes a movie can deliver too many cameos and Easter eggs for its own good. Despite being littered with a huge amount of multiverse worlds and therefore more of these references than your average movie, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse has paid off on pretty much every one of them. This includes as surprising explanation of that glaring question of how Morbius’ post-credits scenes included the MCU’s Vulture after Doctor Strange’s multiverse spell had been corrected.

Morbius was a mess of a movie, having been delayed many times, pivoting itself as a Spider-Man referencing film in its trailers then cutting all links to the webbed wonder from its final cut and coming up with a massively convoluted link to the MCU in its post credits scenes. These scenes saw Michael Keaton’s Adrian Toomes aka Vulture being throw from his MCU jail cell to the Sony Spider-Man Universe. While something similar happened to Tom Hardy’s Eddie Brock aka Venom, his character was returned to his own universe by the end of the movie. Toomes though was allowed to remain in Sony’s universe and meet up with Morbius to discuss a Spider-Man that Morbius should have no knowledge of.

In Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse, Miles Morales and a number of his other Spider-man counterparts are seen stopping a disaster caused by Kingpin’s Super Collider. However, an unplanned side effect of the Collider’s powers was to see various Spider-Man villains, including Donald Glover’s Prowler from the MCU and a version of Vulture finding themselves thrown into completely different universes to where they should be in the form of “incursions.” Going on the principle that everything that happens in the Spider-Verse movies is linked to the wider multiverse, then this could finally be the reason Michael Keaton’s Vulture was thrown into the world of Morbius.

Will Morbius Return to the Big Screen?

Sony Pictures Releasing

Despite the movie crashing and burning – twice – in theaters, Sony have virtually committed to bringing Morbius back for another movie in some form. Whether this is as part of the team up movie or another solo project is not yet known, but the idea of anyone at Sony wanting to go through the trauma of Morbius all over again seems very unlikely right now.

This year will be a big test for Sony’s live-action movie plans, with Kraven the Hunter being the next up to try and make people care about the Spider-Man villains universe being slowly put together for an as yet unknown purpose. Footage of the movie is yet to be revealed to the general public, even with the film supposedly releasing on October 6, 2023, but a reel shown at CinemaCon back in April seemed to please those who saw it thanks to its R-rated lever of blood and violence, and an appearance by another Spider-Man villain, The Rhino.

Kraven the Hunter will be followed by Madame Web, which is set to bring yet another strand to the tapestry being woven around the world of Spider-Man, but all without the main web-slinger himself. Sony may have struck the big time with Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, but their live-action offerings have so far proven it don’t mean a thing if it ain’t got Spidey’s swing.
