Watch: Benches clear in D-Backs-Phillies after Carroll plunked twice

Benches cleared between the Arizona Diamondbacks and Philadelphia Phillies on Monday night after D-Backs manager Torey Lovullo was ejected following a heated exchange with umpires regarding star rookie Corbin Carroll getting plunked twice in two plate appearances.

Lovullo came out of the dugout after lefty Matt Strahm hit Carroll with a pitch on the hand in the third inning. The NL Rookie of the Year front-runner was also hit on the arm in the first frame.

The D-Backs skipper got fired up with home plate umpire Vic Carapazza and also exchanged words with Phillies catcher J.T. Realmuto. When Lovullo started getting into it with Phillies manager Rob Thomson, the benches and bullpens emptied onto the field. No punches were thrown, and umpires eventually issued warnings to both sides.

The incident seemed to electrify the home side. After trailing 5-1 in the third at the time of the fracas, the Diamondbacks started storming back, with Carroll providing the game-tying triple in the fourth inning:

The Diamondbacks went on to win 9-8.

This marks Lovullo’s third ejection of the season and the 17th of his seven-year career as a manager.
