Steinbrenner: Struggling Yankees will ‘get this back on the rails’

New York Yankees owner Hal Steinbrenner is aware his club isn’t meeting expectations and promised fans it would turn things around.

“I want to know what the vibe is out there, and I understand they’re upset,” Steinbrenner said on “The Michael Kay Show,” according to MLB.com’s Bryan Hoch.

“I’m a little confused this year, being the third week in June, why they’re so upset. But they’re upset, and that’s going to get my attention, of course. Everybody just needs to know that we’re working hard on all fronts to get this back on the rails and start playing the way we were for a couple of weeks there in May.”

New York is fresh off a three-game sweep by the Boston Red Sox and is 6-9 this month after going 19-10 in May.

The Yankees have played all but two games in June without the injured Aaron Judge, who was having another All-Star-caliber season. They’re also missing notables like Carlos Rodon, Nestor Cortes, Frankie Montas, and Jonathan Loaisiga.

Other big pieces in the lineup have struggled, including Giancarlo Stanton, Josh Donaldson, and DJ LeMahieu.

The Yankees trail the Tampa Bay Rays and Baltimore Orioles for first place in the AL East standings. The organization last won a World Series in 2009.

“We have failed for many years to win a championship, and that is our ultimate goal. … I believe that (Aaron) Boone is a good manager, and I believe that (Brian) Cashman is a good general manager,” Steinbrenner said.

“My family puts the resources in we can every year, and we strive to field a championship-caliber team. Sooner or later, that’s going to result in a championship.”
