The battle between Team Edward and Team Jacob will soon be fought all over again as The Twilight Saga is getting rebooted as a television series. Previously adapted as a series of feature films, Twilight is based on the original novels by Stephenie Meyer. Released in 2008, the movie series was kicked off by director Catherine Hardwicke, launching what would become a pop culture phenomenon. As Hardwicke was there to get the franchise off the ground on the big screen, what does she think about rolling the dice with another adaptation of the story?
“I think it’s exciting,” Hardwicke tells MovieWeb about the Twilight TV show. “I think we see that it’s an enduring story that people keep engaging with, you know, the TikTok world loves it, the internet generations, everybody keeps finding it. I was talking to a girl the other day, she was born the year we made the first Twilight film, and she was very passionate about it.”

On the advice she can share for the new reboot, the director continued, “So I think, if anything, in the first one, we were able to keep it a little bit more grounded, just a little bit. You felt like there was some kind of reality to it, and you really felt the connection between Bella and Edward. So that might be a fun way to think about it, but also the chemistry between Edward and Bella is so important. We did the chemistry reads like right here at my house. And, you know, Rob and Kristen met each other for the first time here. We really kind of played around with that, to be sure that those kinds of sparks would be there. So I’m sure they’re going to do all that cool stuff, too. I’m excited for it.”

The Twilight Saga Will Be Rebooted on the Small Screen
Summit Entertainment
It was reported in April that Twilight was getting the small screen treatment. As the project, in the works at Lionsgate Television, is still in the early stages, no information has yet been revealed about cast members. It’s also not yet clear which broadcaster or streaming service will host the Twilight show, but given the ongoing interest in the franchise, it doesn’t seem that the reboot will have problems finding a home. Wyck Godfrey and Erik Feig are executive producing the series, and original author Stephenie Meyer is said to be involved, but it’s not clear as to which extent.
Twilight tells the story of Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart), a teenage high school student whose life is changed forever when she meets the vampire Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson). During the course of the series, Edward and Bella’s werewolf pal Jacob Black (Taylor Lautner) compete for her love, splitting the fan base into “Team Edward” and “Team Jacob.”
The Twilight TV series doesn’t yet have a release date. Meanwhile, you can check out Catherine Hardwicke’s new movie, Prisoner’s Daughter, when it is released in theaters on June 30. The film, which stars Brian Cox and Kate Beckinsale, tells the story of a prisoner granted a compassionate release following a terminal cancer diagnosis. You can watch the trailer below.
