Gal Gadot, known for her portrayal of Wonder Woman, is now stepping into the realm of spy thrillers with her latest Netflix film, Heart of Stone. As excitement builds for the next James Bond after Daniel Craig’s retirement, discussions surrounding potential successors are in full swing. Among the names floating around are actors like Henry Cavill, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, and Idris Elba, all being considered for the coveted role. Recently, Gal Gadot engaged in a conversation with GQ, addressing fan theories that have suggested her as a possible first female James Bond.

While flattered by the idea, she emphasized her commitment to fostering original female-led narratives within the spy genre. Gadot’s fondness for classic spy films, including the likes of Bond, Mission, Die Hard, and Bourne Identity, has influenced her aspiration to take on such a role. Her portrayal of Wonder Woman underscored the demand for female-led movies in the genre, a realization that prompted Gadot and her husband Yaron to embark on the creation of Heart of Stone, their own female-led spy thriller.

“That’s very nice of you to say, thank you. I’m such a big fan of this genre, I grew up watching Bond, and Mission, and Die Hard, and Bourne Identity. The little girl in me always wanted to play one, and I think after the success of Wonder Woman is when I realized, “Wait a second, there’s an audience for this, where it’s female led.” There’s more space for female-led movies in the genre, and that’s kind of what gave Yaron and I, whose my husband and my partner, the boost to go ahead and develop one ourselves. The action, the twists and turns, the scope, the drama, I love everything about these movies, and I’m so happy that we can share Heart of Stone with you.”

Netflix

The initial reception of Heart of Stone was met with a mixed bag of reviews, with a Rotten Tomatoes score of 25%. However, the score has gradually climbed to 31% following the assessment of 90 reviews. This espionage-driven tale brings Gal Gadot into a role she actively pursued. In an exclusive conversation with MovieWeb, Gadot shared her passion for exploring a character like Rachel Stone. What attracted her to the role was the opportunity to delve into a more grounded and gritty narrative, allowing her to showcase her versatility as an actress. She explained:

“It’s funny, because I feel like beforehand, the roles kind of found me. With Rachel, I was looking for her. I was so passionate to tell a story like this, but in a different tone, much more grounded, much more gritty and raw. And you know, that just simply excites me.”

“I love the suspense, the twists and turns, the drama, the scope, everything about them,” she continued. “I love getting into a movie and going through a journey, and feeling like I’ve been all around the world and come back, closer than being delivered or in the theater.”

The film is directed by Tom Harper and supported by an ensemble cast featuring the likes of Jamie Dornan, Alia Bhatt, Sophie Okonedo, Matthias Schweighöfer, Jing Lusi, Paul Ready, Jon Kortajarena, Matteo Cicconi, and Angela Esposito. Heart of Stone is currently streaming on Netflix.
