Jamie Dornan Auditioned for Man of Steel Wearing Superman Pajamas: ‘Was That a Mistake?’

Summary

  • Jamie Dornan reveals he once auditioned for the lead role in Man of Steel wearing his own Superman pajamas.
  • Dornan’s unconventional choice of attire for the audition likely did not give off the desired “Man of Steel” vibes.
  • While he may not have become Superman, Dornan’s name has been considered for other superhero roles like Batman and The Fantastic Four.

Thanks to his leading man looks, Fifty Shades of Grey star Jamie Dornan often finds himself in consideration for comic book movie roles. But the actor reveals he has only ever auditioned for one: Superman. Appearing recently on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Dornan offered some insight into his audition for Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel, with the actor revealing that he turned up in his own Superman suit. A decision he thinks may have been a mistake…

“The only one I auditioned for is Superman. That was way back when, like when Henry Cavill got cast. That’s probably 12 years ago or something. I wore my own suit there. Was that a mistake? They were Superman pyjamas, they weren’t an actual suit. I remember an early audition for that. I got nowhere near putting the [real] suit on… I’ve had meetings with heads of studios that do those things and would talk about it, but I never got deep in any audition process for them.”

So, not only was Dornan wearing his own Superman costume, it wasn’t even really a costume, and was instead a set of pajamas. While the original Superman suit with the red trunks over the top has often been compared to pajamas over the years, the idea of Dornan literally sporting some for his audition does not exactly give off Man of Steel vibes.

Ultimately, Henry Cavill won the role of Superman in Man of Steel back in 2013, and while Dornan has yet to join the pantheon of superheroes, his name has been mentioned when it comes to casting the likes of Batman or The Fantastic Four.

The DC icon that is Superman will next return to the big screen in James Gunn’s Superman: Legacy, with Pearl star David Corenswet set to lead the project as Clark Kent, aka Superman. While details of the DCU reboot remain largely under wraps, it has been revealed that Superman: Legacy will focus on a younger version of the Man of Steel, with the supporting cast including Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, and Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane.

Superman: Legacy is currently scheduled for release on July 11, 2025.

As for Jamie Dornan, he is currently starring alongside none other than Wonder Woman herself, Gal Gadot, in the Netflix action flick Heart of Stone. The movie follows Gadot as Rachel Stone, an intelligence operative and the only woman who stands between her powerful global peacekeeping organization and the loss of its most valuable, and dangerous, asset. Directed by Tom Harper from a screenplay by Greg Rucka and Allison Schroeder and from a story by Rucka, the rest of the cast includes Alia Bhatt, Sophie Okonedo, and Matthias Schweighöfer.

Heart of Stone is now available to stream on Netflix, and has been met with mixed reviews from critics.
